Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium / grp superstructure she features a 10.6m beam and a 3.3m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 851 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Construction started in early 2001. Launched in May 2003 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in July 2003.

Exterior Design

The exterior design of Fortunate Sun is characterized by its raked bow, which enhances both the aesthetic appeal and the hydrodynamic efficiency of the vessel. The hull is painted in a solid grey, providing a sleek and modern look. The superstructure stands out in a clean white, creating a striking contrast with the hull. The boot top and antifoul colors are both black, adding to the overall cohesive and sophisticated appearance of the yacht.

The teak decks are spacious, with each length of teak scarfed together to achieve a continuous and clean appearance. The main deck entrance hall is lined with bird's-eye maple tiles, complemented by custom-made furniture, setting a tone of understated elegance. The aft main deck serves as a shaded outdoor area when not occupied by the tenders at sea.

On the upper deck, a standout feature is the radially expanding table that rotates to reveal extra panels, allowing for easy expansion and additional seating. This table, constructed of stainless steel and teak, is a functional piece of furniture that enhances the dining experience on board. The barbecue, integrated into the built-in side units, can be pulled out like a large drawer, demonstrating practical design.

The sun deck is equipped with curved settees on the aft section and a spa pool just forward, designed for comfort even when the yacht is traveling at top speed. The composite superstructure shields this area, minimizing wind impact.

Interior Design

Fortunate Sun features an interior design designed by Tim Heywood. Upon entering from the starboard side of the main deck, guests are greeted by an entrance hall lined with bird's-eye maple tiles. Custom-made furniture accents the space, and a spiral staircase leads to the upper deck. Forward of the hall is the owner's suite, while aft lies the formal dining room and a cinema lounge beyond that.

The cinema lounge is outfitted with darker tones than the rest of the yacht, creating an appropriate atmosphere for viewing. A granite-topped cabinet houses a 152cm plasma screen that can be raised when needed. The yacht's fully-integrated electronic system, installed by Intelect, allows all screens on board to access a library of 500 films and CDs, as well as automated control of dimmer lights, blinds, and air-conditioning. This system extends to the owner's suite, captain's, and crew cabins, providing access to navigation and monitoring data.

The formal dining room is designed to be intimate, with a high gloss madrona table surrounded by high-backed suede chairs. The madrona detail is repeated in the panels that house counterbalanced sliding glass doors, finished in satin rather than gloss. The ceiling in the dining room, as in all guest living areas, is lined with padded leather. A gold leaf panel inset into the leather highlights the center of the room.

Forward and to port, the dining room is serviced by a commercial-standard galley, entirely fitted out in stainless steel and equipped with the latest technology. A motion sensor-operated door between the dining room and the galley facilitates easy service.

The upper deck balances formal interior spaces with informal exterior areas. The sky lounge offers expansive views and a relaxed atmosphere, featuring two L-shaped settees around low tables and a bar with a large plasma screen.

The bridge, located on the forward half of the upper deck, showcases the owner's preference for advanced technology. The Mascom navigation system integrates radar, monitoring, and navigation data, with screens also available on the wing controls.

Accommodation

Fortunate Sun provides accommodation for up to 10 guests in five well-appointed cabins. The owner's suite is located on the main deck, occupying the forward section. This spacious suite is designed for both comfort and functionality, featuring large windows that allow natural light to flood the room and offer spectacular views. The suite includes an office area equipped with a plasma television screen connected to the yacht's entertainment and navigation systems. His-and-hers dressing rooms are situated on either side of the bathroom for added convenience.

The lower deck houses four additional guest staterooms, which can be configured to suit various needs. These staterooms can be set up as two twins and two doubles, or all four can be configured as doubles. Additionally, the twin rooms can be converted into settees, creating two VIP suites if desired. Each stateroom comes with its own ensuite marble-lined shower room.

Fortunate Sun also accommodates a dedicated crew of 14, ensuring top-notch service throughout the voyage. Crew quarters are located on the lower deck, separated from the guest areas by a solid bulkhead to maintain privacy. The crew has their own mess area where they can relax and access the yacht's entertainment system.
