- Electric-powered tenders & fast charging stations
- Low-profile design with clean shapes
Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 44'7" beam and a 12'4" draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 2,554 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in late 2020. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in April 2023 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in July 2023.
Exterior Design
The yacht's sleek, streamlined profile cuts an impressive figure on the water, with its low, slim hull optimized for cruising speed. This optimization has resulted in a vessel that not only performs with remarkable efficiency but also boasts a distinctive aesthetic appeal.
The hull's final form, tested and perfected in a towing tank, showcases a pioneering approach to yacht design. The louvered aft deck overhangs, made entirely of carbon fiber and attached to the aluminum superstructure, require no support pillars. This construction choice not only contributes to weight reduction but also opens up new possibilities for the deck layout.
In keeping with the theme of sustainability and carbon reduction, the yacht's primary tenders are electric-powered and custom-made by Tenderworks. Four fast-charging stations installed by Feadship allow for convenient charging in the water or in the tender garage, ensuring that the tenders are always ready for use, thus emphasizing the fusion of luxury and environmental responsibility that epitomizes Obsidian.
Interior Design
Stepping inside Obsidian is akin to entering a world where supreme luxury meets thoughtful design. The interior aesthetics are brought to life by the British firm RWD, in collaboration with MONK Design, creating a rich tapestry of textures, colors, and materials that exude elegance and sophistication. The layout is bold and modern, reflecting the yacht’s exterior profile and pushing the boundaries of traditional yacht design.
The use of a single-level engine room, a first in many years for Feadship, has allowed for considerable freedom in crafting the interior layout, resulting in more space for guest accommodations. The volume of this 84-meter yacht is comparable to that of a 100-meter Feadship, offering a wealth of space for both functional and leisure areas.
The yacht's design language is centered on the theme of surprise; corridors and rooms are oriented away from the traditional fore and aft or athwartships axis, creating a sense of unexpected elegance. Except for the staterooms, none of the interior rooms have any 90-degree angles, defying conventional design norms and offering intriguing visual perspectives.
An asymmetrical atrium staircase leads to a lower deck dining saloon, which features an entire wall that opens to offer a terrace view just 75 cm above sea level. This unique design element brings the ocean closer to the guests, providing an immersive dining experience that is both intimate and awe-inspiring.
The bow of the yacht houses a hidden gem - an interior observation lounge. This space is made possible by the innovative use of submarine anchors, eliminating the need for a mooring deck forward. The lounge boasts double-curved glass floor-to-ceiling windows, providing unparalleled views of the surrounding seascape.
At the stern, you will find the Aqua Lounge, a multifunctional space that can serve as a cinema, a classroom, or a relaxation area. Massive windows below the water level offer a unique view of the aquatic world outside, creating an extraordinary backdrop for any activity. The nearby gym allows guests to maintain their fitness routine while enjoying the stunning undersea view.
Other unique features include a hidden staircase leading to a study and a sunken lounge on the main deck. These unexpected elements add an element of intrigue and discovery to the onboard experience.
Accommodation
Obsidian offers accommodation for up to 14 guests in 7 suites comprising an owners cabin and 6 double cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 27 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.
Performance & Capabilities
The yacht Obsidian is a vessel that prioritizes performance while incorporating advanced technologies aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. Obsidian is using Feadship’s Advanced Electrical Drive (FAED) program, which is a diesel-electric hybrid power system. This system is supported by a 4.5 MWh battery bank, charged by a set of four custom generators based on CAT C32 engines. These generators are equipped with permanent magnet alternators to efficiently deliver power based on the yacht's requirements.
Obsidian's propulsion is handled by a pair of Veth contra-rotating thrusters, which provide both propulsion and steering. This setup eliminates the need for traditional drive shafts and rudders, enhancing hydrodynamic efficiency and reducing drag. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis has been employed to optimize the design of the thruster components, minimizing vibration and maximizing propulsion efficiency.
The yacht can cruise for approximately 35 nautical miles at 10 knots solely on battery power. This capability highlights the efficiency of the hybrid system, allowing for silent operation when anchored, with batteries providing energy for 10 to 15 hours. The electrical system on Obsidian operates on a 1,000-volt DC system, a significant upgrade from previous models.
To complement the propulsion system, the hull design has been optimized for cruising speed, using advanced materials like carbon fiber for weight reduction and structural efficiency. This combination of advanced propulsion and hull design contributes to a significant reduction in environmental impact, with the yacht operating with 27% less environmental impact when using fossil fuels, and 60% less with HVO, a non-fossil biofuel.
