Record-breaking superyacht PHI delivered with laser light display

Royal Huisman revealed it has officially delivered 58.5m (192ft) superyacht PHI, its largest ever motor yacht and the longest sub-500GT motor yacht in the world.

Royal Huisman has celebrated the delivery of 58.5m (192ft) superyacht PHI with a laser light display that highlights one of the many innovative features of what is now officially the longest sub-500GT motor yacht in the world.

Motor yacht PHI’s laser-powered exterior lights lit up her sleek, low hull and superstructure profile outside of the Dutch yard’s Amsterdam facilities as she prepared to be handed over to her “experienced and visionary” Owner.

The Owner set out a clear brief for the project, and both the interior and exterior layout are based on a unique mathematical formula known as Phi, from which the superyacht takes its name. The formula, also known as the Golden Ratio, governs the continuation of dimensions and shapes throughout the design and sees three themes running through the yacht: the galaxy, the ocean surface and the underwater world.

The job of interpreting the Owner’s desires fell to Dutch design firm Cor D. Rover, who worked on the exteriors, London-based interior designers Lawson Robb and Van Oossanen Naval Architects, who developed the eye-catching hull which takes its inspiration from the hood of a cobra. It is the Fast Displacement XL hull form that allows the yacht to be long and sleek, making motor yacht PHI “by far” the longest motor yacht in the sub 500GT category.

Motor yacht PHI will be joined on her travels by its rugged 36m (118ft) support vessel ‘PHI Phantom’, delivered last week and which shares the same design DNA as its mothership. Support yacht PHI Phantom is capable of bunkering fuel and will carry PHI’s toys and tenders, freeing up significant space onboard motor yacht PHI. In fact, it has been estimated motor yacht PHI would need to be a 90m (295ft) project to facilitate the same configuration onboard a single yacht.

Jan Timmerman, CEO of Royal Huisman, says: "The delivery is a moment of great pride for our team. It is also bittersweet, having to say farewell to PHI, as her creation has been part of our daily lives for several years. At the same time we know that PHI and her shadow vessel will conquer the oceans. We wish PHI's owner and everyone onboard fair winds, following seas and a great experience - as enjoyed onboard every Royal Huisman superyacht."

Details have largely been kept secret about the project but we do know motor yacht PHI will accommodate 12 guests across six cabins and features a 7m (23ft) swimming pool to aft that can be filled with seawater or freshwater. The pool’s floor is also maneuverable, to create extra deck space when needed. The upper deck of the superyacht will be dedicated entirely to the Owner’s penthouse.

Royal Huisman first divulged details of motor yacht PHI in May 2018 and she was launched in July of this year, commencing her sea trials in October. With a pedigree for building sailing yachts, motor yacht PHI also takes her place as the largest motor yacht built by Royal Huisman.

The Dutch yard has a series of other sizeable projects in the pipeline including Project 406 which, at 52m (170.6ft), will be the world’s largest true sportfisher yacht upon her planned delivery in 2023.

Whilst motor yacht PHI will set new standards in terms of length for a sub-500GT yacht, there are many other shapes and styles available.
