Performance

Big powerful planing yachts able to push on to around 24knots, these serious passage makers can also cruise for long distances. The Grande Trideck is powered by twin 2400hp or 2600hp MTUs and has a range of 1700nm at 12knots. The Custom Line offers the same 2600hp MTUs or smaller 1920hp options, with a lower 1100nm range at around 12knots. 

The notable difference between the two yachts is fuel capacity, with 23,000l (5,059gal) tanks for the Azimut and 16,300lt (3,585gal) for the Custom Line. Using the range data, this equates to around 163l/h for the Azimut at 12knots and 169l/h for the Custom Line at 11knots. Azimut makes some bold claims on the efficiency of its D2P (Displacement-to-Planing) hull design, and while the Grande Trideck is the more efficient of the two, the main difference is clearly overall fuel capacity.

Interior

Italian design and style know-how is in full effect here. Both yachts enjoy massive sections of glass around their salons, but where the Custom Line opts for a traditional lounge and forward dining area layout, the Azimut luxuriates in one long social space, its main interior dining area found on the upper deck - a major advantage for a tri-deck yacht.

There is more to these yachts than layout. Style is a huge driver, and again these two go about their impressive work quite differently. The Custom Line is resplendent in detail and quality materials, a classic contemporary interior design that uses the space fully. The Azimut does things differently with a next-generation design full of organic shapes, rounded forms, and space, lots of space.    

Both galleys are located forward of the salon, with private crew access.

Accommodation

Magnificent main deck Owner’s staterooms are found on both yachts, with very similar layouts that push the ensuites forward into the bows. The design leaves the most space possible for the cabins with studies, lounges and walk-in wardrobes all worked in.

Four more cabins are below decks, again with a similar layout that creates two doubles and two twins, although exact cabin configurations are open to the Owner’s needs. The Azimut can then add a fun upper deck cabin option making this a six-cabin yacht. A versatile space with great views, it can also be used as a Captain’s cabin or done away with entirely for a larger lounge.

The style is again quite different between these yachts, so you can choose between contemporary superyacht opulence and Azimut’s fresh organic thinking. All cabins are en suite and feature deep hull-side windows.

Helm Station

These yachts feature proper separate raised bridges with the Captain enjoying a vast expanse of screens set before excellent forward visibility. Guests or crew can also join the Captain on longer passages.

Both bridges feature easy deck access, the Custom Line to the raised foredeck or flybridge, the Azimut connecting out to its foredeck or aft through the upper deck lounge. The Trideck design also allows for a Captain’s cabin between the bridge and lounge.

Deck Areas

It might seem unfair to compare a tri-deck yacht with the two-deck 120, but the Custom Line has a few tricks up its sleeve, including a cleverly zoned flybridge that at least creates the impression of two separate upper deck spaces. The Azimut is, however, hard to beat. It actually has four decks if you include a clever mezzanine terrace that not only creates an entire extra deck to enjoy but also makes the main deck aft feel that much more private and so pleasant to use. From here the Grande Trideck has a luxurious foredeck lounge, a private upper deck running off the skylounge and a full sundeck to be finished to the Owner’s desires.

The Custom Line’s more traditional layout includes that long spread of flybridge deck that encompasses driving position, dining, lounge and sunpads. There is then side deck access to the foredeck lounge, where huge spreads of sunpad await. The main deck aft is neatly set within the yacht’s coamings for maximum privacy, with dining and lounge layouts available.

Flybridge

The Azimut’s uppermost deck is a full sundeck with no driving position, but this is far from an omission. Dedicated to the joys of deck lifestyle, this space can be largely laid out to the Owner’s wishes, the hardtop being one of very few set pieces of design. With space for a full bar, dining and lounges the options are plentiful.

The Custom Line has a proper flybridge with a forward helm position, it packs in the luxury across what is a vast space and offers Owner’s the chance to take control of their yacht at sea and feel the full exhilaration that comes with it.

Beach Club

Strive as we might for impartiality in these head-to-heads, sometimes there’s a drop-the-mic moment. The Azimut Grande Trideck delivers about 10 of these, but its beach club is one of the best. Let’s start with the fact it has a real beach club, most yachts at this length might offer a luxury tender garage but this is a bona fide superyacht club, with a vast terrace, seating, bar and changing facilities set behind a ribbed teak wall.

It can do this because the tender garage lies forward, opening to starboard. The 120 in any other comparison does well enough with its aft tender garage delivering easy launch and recovery.

Compare Layouts

While these two yachts share some very similar layout traits on the main deck and below, the Azimut’s tri-deck design creates some obvious advantages such as the upper deck lounge and sundeck. But clever design also creates six separate deck areas to enjoy, moving from beach club to mezzanine, main, upper and sun deck, plus the raised foredeck lounge. The separate starboard-side garage plays an important role too, the athwartships design saving on space. By comparison, the Custom Line has a main deck, flybridge and foredeck lounge, with a traditional tender garage at the stern.
