Benetti Fast 125

Two of the world’s most iconic names in yachting delivering exactly what they do best with these 40m, tri-deck, five-cabin superyachts packed with power and personality.

Constructed from GRP and designed for serious, crew-operated cruising, the Sunseeker 131 and Benetti Fast 125 can hit 20knots with ease or run efficiently at 10-12knots for over 1500nm.

Both yachts are semi-custom, meaning there is a good deal of choice on finish and layout. The Sunseeker is the slightly longer yacht at 40m to the Benetti’s 38.1m, but the Italian yacht is the wider at 8.45m to the British yacht’s 8.09m, balancing out the overall volume and space on offer.

Performance

With planing hulls, these yachts can hit speeds of over 20knots but do so a little differently. The Sunseeker uses conventional shaft drives while the Benetti, unusually, has pod drives. The other big difference is the draft, the Sunseeker’s hull dropping to 2.85m, the Benetti only 2.08m with its self-titled D2P (displacement to planing) hull design. More draft can mean a better ride at sea, but also more drag, while a lower draft can be efficient and very useful for accessing shallow bays.

The Sunseeker 131 is powered by twin MTU 12V 4000 M93 engines providing 3140hp each with a top speed of 23knots. For efficient or long-distance cruising, the 131 has optional extended fuel tanks that take fuel capacity from 21,650l to 26,700l extending the range from 1500nm to over 2000nm at 11knots. The Benetti’s 1750nm range comes from 25,000l tanks, not noticeably better than the Sunseeker.

The Fast 125 does have two engine options, the uprated twin 2600hp MTU 16V 2000 M94 delivers a top speed of 24knots, with a 1900hp MTU option that is more cruising focused.

Both yachts offer zero speed stabilisers, incredibly useful for longer slow-speed passages, delivering a smooth stable onboard experience whether running or at rest.

Interior

As tri-deck yachts, buyers will enjoy two dedicated lounges on the main and upper decks. The overall interior layouts are very similar, the main deck salon is the largest, with an open-plan sweep of space and light. Large glass sections flank each salon with a separate dining area forward. The Sunseeker has the larger of the two main salons, but the Benetti has an excellent galley, with a fun breakfast area, plus it has a side deck door off the dining area.

The upper deck delivers a proper sky lounge, an elevated, more private lounge that leads onto its own private deck. The exact layout of the sky lounge is very much left to the Owner’s taste and needs, with everything from a straightforward social area to a full gym possible. What is guaranteed are incredible views, with massive full-height glass sections on each yacht.

Accommodation

Both yachts have the Owner’s stateroom on the main deck, a real superyacht feature, the elevated position creating better views and a sense of privacy and distance from the four guest cabins below decks.

Interestingly, both yachts have the Owner's en suite right forward, in the bows, leaving the wider part of the yacht for the cabin itself. The Sunseeker feels big with an open plan style that includes a study and walk-in wardrobe, but this can be customised considerably. The Azimut offers the same ideas and space but adds the option of a spectacular fold-down balcony.

The four guest cabins are all ensuite with two doubles and two twins. The crew quarters are forward on the lower deck with the Benetti having three twin cabins and the Sunseeker four, both adding a good mess area.

Helm Station

As pilothouse designs, these yachts have highly professional helm stations with a separate Captain's cabin and office. The upper deck positions mean good visibility forward and there are broad stretches of displays and touch screen controls.

The finish and feel are slightly different, the Azimut has a warm wooden finish while the Sunseeker is dark and serious. The Sunseeker can accommodate a whopping six MFDs with both yachts having a central helm seat for the skipper and guest or crew seating behind. There is a door to the foredeck on both yachts with easy access to the bridge from any part of the yacht.

Deck Areas

The tri-deck design creates two tiers of aft deck terraces for dining and lounges, as well as a full sundeck at the very top of the yacht.

With so much space to play with on the sun deck, each yacht can be laid out to suit the Owner’s style, but there is easily enough space for a bar, lounge, dining table, Jacuzzi and free deck area for loungers. Across the mid and forward area of the sun deck, a hardtop and sunroof create shade and privacy during the day and also some great mood lighting at night.

The upper deck aft runs off the sky lounge and presents a more private place to retreat to, but if you want something a little more exciting the foredeck lounge on both yachts is the place. These forward lounges are actually very private in port, when the yacht is moored stern-to, but at sea, when underway, these elevated forward lounges are exhilarating. The Sunseeker has a U-shape seat and table, while the Benetti has a tiered design with seating leading to massive sun pads. Both are excellent.

Flybridge

A superb place to enjoy days or nights on the water, this raised deck and driving position adds another dimension to yacht ownership and the driving experience.

Beach Club

A true beach club should be a waterside lounge and terrace. Usually at the stern, a beach club might open on one, two or three sides of the yacht. It should be practical, able to withstand plenty of use, watersports and saltwater, but also luxurious, creating a spectacular retreat day or night.

Compare Layouts

These semi-custom yachts are very similar in layouts and overall tri-deck design, with the main deck Owner’s cabin, pilothouse, sky lounge, sun deck and foredeck all matching up. Flexibility on finish and layout are equally good with closely matched proportions across the key areas of cabins, salons and decks.

The crew quarters, with 7 berths for the Benetti and nine of the Sunseeker, are both set forward in the bows.

The main difference is created by the drives, the sterndrive Sunseeker has its tender garage in the stern, the Benetti’s aft-sited pod drives pushing the tender garage forward of the engine bay. But they also leave space for a neat little waterside lounge in the transom. Teak-lined and very much a mini beach club, it is joined by a fold out terrace to make a great spot for a sundowner or to swim off.
