Detroit Diesel Series 71 Range

The Detroit Diesel Series 71, a two-stroke diesel engine, comes in inline and V configurations. The inline model debuted in 1938, followed by the V configuration in 1957. Each cylinder in the engine displaces 71 cubic inches — regardless of configuration or total cylinder count — hence it being called the Series 71.

With the V model offering configurations of up to 24 cylinders and the inline model supporting a maximum of six cylinders per engine, the 71 Series provides versatility.

Despite the range of cylinder configurations, parts for the Detroit Diesel Series 71 are highly interchangeable and feature consistent design characteristics. Available in both turbocharged and turbocharged/aftercooled versions, the largest cylinder configuration, the 24V-71, generates an impressive 1,800hp and is primarily used in marine applications.
