The 232'11" classic yacht Argossy was delivered to her owners in 1931 by German shipyard Krupp Germaniawerft. Her interior design and exterior styling comes from the drawing boards of LUCA DINI Design & Architecture, while Cox & Stevens is responsible for her naval architecture.

Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 30' beam and a 10'4" draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 630 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Accommodation

She is also capable of carrying up to 17 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Owner's Brief

Argosy's journey began in 1931 at the Germania Werft in Kiel, Germany. She was a masterpiece, custom-built for Charles A. Stone, a name tied to the US brokerage firm Hayden, Stone & Co. Designed by Cox & Stevens, she housed 15 passengers and a crew of 20. At 753 GT, and was every bit luxurious for its time.

How did they do it?

By 1934, her ownership changed hands to Sir Thomas Sopwith, a British aviator & yachtsman, who renamed her Vita. Her new life involved shadowing the J-class yacht Endeavour during the 1934 America's Cup. Later, under the new name of Abril, she smuggled arms to support the Spanish Republican Armed Forces during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939.

In the wartime callup of 1942, the U.S. Navy acquired her. By 26 October 1942, she was renamed and renovated into USS Cythera (PY-31), a patrol vessel. Her duties shifted. She operated within the Gulf Sea Frontier, executing exercises from Miami, Florida, & escorting convoys towards Galveston, Texas & Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Come March 1943, New York City became her destination, marking her new assignment within the Eastern Sea Frontier. As part of her duties, she escorted convoys to southern U.S. ports until September 1943.

Cythera's wartime service continued as she moved to New London, Connecticut, in December 1943. There, she assisted the Underwater Sound Laboratory, engaging in submarine training & experimental sonar operations. Her role further evolved by January 1945 in Port Everglades, Florida, where she joined the Antisubmarine Development Operational Detachment. Her experimental operations with submarines lasted until April 1945. On 14 March 1946, the U.S. Navy placed her out of service, eventually transferring her to the United States Maritime Commission in November 1946.

The Tyre Shipping Company, a shell entity under the Bergsin Group, purchased her in 1946. March 1947 saw her carrying over 600 passengers to Palestine, a pivotal moment in Israel's history. By 1948, renamed as INS Ma'oz (K 24) for the Israeli Navy, participating in the Arab-Israeli War. Post-Suez Crisis in 1956, her ownership shifted to an Israeli businessman, taking the name Abril once more.

Navigazione Libera di Golfo, an Italian company, later acquired her. She then bore the name Santa Maria del Mare, serving as a ferry in the Gulf of Naples.

In 2008, she was set to return to her roots as a luxury yacht, named Rossy One. Just as the refit was nearing completion after a massive project, the owner ran out of funds to continue. After changing hands twice more and being laid up for two years, in January 2022, a transport ship carried her to the Weser River for a comprehensive overhaul at a Lemwerder yard. Currently, she waits at the small harbour of Brake for her turn in the sheds at Lemwerder.
