Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 36'6" beam and a 13'11" draft. The yacht is built over 4 decks with an internal volume of 1,848 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in late 1942. Launched in July 1943 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in November 1943.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of Christina O is an elegant blend of old-world charm and modern-day luxury. Originally built as an Atlantic convoy escort, the hull was significantly altered, with her bow and stern replaced by more yacht-like structures designed by Caesar Pinnau.
The yacht's exterior is characterized by a long run sheer line that is only broken by the well deck in her counter stern. The superstructure of Christina O is rounded and modern, fitting seamlessly into the yacht's overall aesthetic. The topsides, painted in a glistening white, add a touch of opulence that is perfectly in line with the yacht's status as a luxury vessel.
The yacht's extensive deck areas are another noteworthy feature of her exterior design. The compass deck is the highest of all and offers a ring of teak sun-loungers and a bar. The bridge deck features a spacious teaked area, while the promenade deck offers a complete circuit of the yacht, including the spa pool deck at the aft end. Here, guests can enjoy alfresco dining, a substantial bar, and a dip in the raised spa pool.
The main deck of Christina O is partially shaded by the helipad and sheltered by large fashion plates. This deck area maintains much of its original design, including the famous Onassis swimming pool with its mosaic of a Minoan bull and vaulter. The aft mast, now enlarged to serve as the yacht's main funnel, and the bollards and windlasses that have witnessed many a late-night conversation, remain intact, adding a touch of nostalgic charm to the yacht's exterior.
Interior Design
The most striking feature of Christina O is the Lapis Lounge. This splendid room, lined in oak and iroko paneling beneath a white-beamed deckhead, is a haven of comfort and luxury. The lounge is named after its celebrated lapis lazuli-trimmed fireplace, a relic that remains an eye-catching centerpiece, despite no longer being functional due to modern safety regulations. The walls of this delightful room are adorned with art by renowned artists such as Renoir, Le Corbusier, and de Chirico.
Adjacent to the Lapis Lounge is Ari's Bar, a charming and cozy space with its original, half-circular rope-covered bar. The bar's glass top sits above a lighted relief of the sea, depicting the evolution of the ship through successive ages. The infamous bar stools, covered in aging leather from a whale's foreskin, remain a quirky and memorable feature of the yacht's history.
Christina O also boasts a grand dining saloon. This room is dominated by a huge, 24-seater table in the center, with four smaller and more intimate four-seater tables lining a raised floor level on the port-side gallery. The music lounge, just adjacent to the dining saloon, is yet another delightful guest area, furnished with a grand piano and a collection of Maria Callas memorabilia.
In addition to these, Christina O also offers a library, a sports lounge, a children's playroom, and a gymnasium, ensuring that every guest will have an array of activities to enjoy. The yacht's vast open-air deck spaces, including the promenade deck and the spa pool deck, offer a perfect blend of relaxation and recreation.
Accommodation
The yacht was adapted to comfortably accommodate up to 36 guests, ensuring that each passenger experiences a level of luxury that is unrivaled in the yachting world. The accommodation comprises 19 elegantly appointed cabins, each exuding a unique charm and sophistication that pays homage to the yacht's rich history.
The Onassis Suite, named after the yacht's famous former owner Aristotle Onassis, is the crown jewel of the Christina O. This stunning suite comprises three rooms: a spacious bedroom, a lavish bathroom, and an impressive study. The king-sized bed, adorned with fine Venetian linens, and original Baccarat crystal wall lights, adds an extra layer of luxury to the suite. The adjacent bathroom, lined with white Penteli marble sourced from the same ancient quarry that supplied the builders of the Parthenon, is equipped with a grand bath and a six-headed shower.
In addition to the Onassis Suite, the Christina O offers 18 guest staterooms. Ten of these are located on the main deck, forward of the atrium, while the remaining eight are situated on the cabin deck, towards the aft end. All staterooms can be reconfigured to provide either double or twin beds, and are equipped with luxurious, marble-lined shower rooms.
Each stateroom is meticulously designed to provide the utmost comfort. The rooms are embellished with prints of the Greek Islands and furnished with a television, surround sound, and DVD/CD players. The staterooms towards the center of the yacht are slightly larger and come with spacious seating areas, writing desks, and larger walk-in wardrobes.
Christina O is staffed by a professional crew of 36, managed by the captain and ten officers. The crew is divided into three divisions: deck, engine room, and hotel staff. This highly trained crew ensures that all guests receive world-class service throughout their stay onboard.
Performance & Capabilities
At the heart of the Christina O's performance lie its two state-of-the-art MAN straight-six diesel engines, each delivering a formidable power output of 2,775bhp. This surpasses the power provided by the yacht's original steam units, enabling the vessel to reach a cruising speed of an impressive 19 knots. The engines' design and configuration ensure optimal fuel efficiency, contributing to the yacht's substantial cruising range.
Christina O is equipped with two pairs of expertly rebuilt Vosper stabilizers, which provide reliable stability in varying sea conditions. This ensures a smooth and comfortable ride for passengers, irrespective of the weather or the yacht's speed.
The yacht's mechanical capabilities are not limited to its performance at sea. The vessel houses five generators, each with a capacity of 470kW, ensuring a constant supply of power for all onboard systems and amenities, while a state-of-the-art waste management system, including an incinerator and heavy-duty waste shredder, ensures the vessel's operation remains environmentally friendly.
The yacht's design incorporates an array of technological advancements that enhance its performance and functionality. The bridge, for instance, is equipped with an array of advanced navigation and communication systems, enabling the crew to navigate with precision and communicate effectively with ports and other vessels.
Amenities
The yacht features a well-equipped gym, allowing her guests to keep up their fitness regimes at sea. An elevator makes the yacht fully-accessible, while air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort. Christina O also features a deck jacuzzi for cooling off.
