Somnium Yacht

Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement aluminium hull and superstructure she features a 32'2" beam and a 8'1" draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 740 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Launched in April 2021 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in June 2021.

Exterior Design

The sleek profile of this full-displacement 55-metre yacht, fashioned entirely from aluminium, effortlessly captures the essence of speed and grace. While Somnium possesses the stately comportment of a displacement yacht, her appearance breaks the conventional mold with a more streamlined, contemporary aesthetic.

The choice of aluminium as the primary material for Somnium's construction was a deliberate one, influenced by its advantageous living space to gross tonnage ratio and the ability to achieve a reduced draught. This translates into expanded space above the waterline, enhancing the yacht's sleek and agile form. The subtle marriage of efficiency, functional square footage, and the cool, modern appeal of aluminium culminated in a yacht that is as efficient as it is visually striking.

The exterior design by De Voogt Naval Architects, led by Ruud Bakker, pays homage to the owner's passion for high-performance automobiles. This influence is seamlessly integrated into Somnium's dynamic lines, with the long bow and expansive foredeck hinting at the power and elegance synonymous with luxury sports cars. The automotive references are thoughtfully incorporated throughout, including the aft sections of the decks, which draw inspiration from the rear diffusers of high-end sports vehicles. Even the funnel grill elicits the iconic grilles of classic Ferraris, and the flagpole aft is reminiscent of the sleek bumpers found on such illustrious cars.

Further complementing Somnium's striking façade is the large forward terrace, initially conceived as a simple request for a bench offering unobstructed views. This area has since evolved into a versatile outdoor space, providing a multitude of configurations for lounging, social gatherings, or athletic pursuits. The addition of a sunbathing bed, equipped with its own windshield, ensures it remains a haven of relaxation even while underway. With 100 square metres of open deck, the foredeck has become a focal point for al fresco enjoyment.

Convenience and entertainment extend to the yacht's aft, where the tender garage is ingeniously located on the foredeck, making room for a beach club, a versatile pool, and dedicated space for weight training at the stern. This clever utilization of space, nestled beside the pristine engine room, exemplifies Feadship's expertise in crafting a yacht that is both beautiful and functionally astute.

Interior Design

The interior of Somnium is a masterful reflection of the breathtaking Galápagos Islands, an archipelago renowned for its raw and enchanting beauty. This design concept is deeply embedded throughout the yacht’s living spaces, creating an atmosphere that is at once complex, serene, and teeming with life.

Upon stepping into the main saloon, guests are transported to a realm that evokes the distinct ambiance of the Galápagos. The carpeting is a stylized representation of an idyllic lagoon, with gradations of color that invite the mind to ponder the depths of clear, tranquil waters. Overhead, the ceiling marquetry captures the interplay of light dancing upon the water's surface, adding a dynamic and shimmering quality to the space.

The furniture on Somnium, crafted by the Italian firm FM Architettura, complements the yacht’s thematic essence. A prime example of this can be found in the foredeck's seating arrangement, where the "paraggine" chairs, reminiscent of those adorning the shores of Portofino’s Paraggi beach, provide an inviting locale for relaxation and contemplation. These comfortable and stylish pieces allow the owner and guests to enjoy the yacht's expansive outdoor spaces fully.

As we transition to the dining area, the design inspiration continues to unfold. The coffee tables, forged in bronze, are reminiscent of the islands' parched terrain, while the dining table's custom light fixture subtly suggests the fine scales of the Galápagos wildlife. The bespoke dining table itself is framed in leather, with an embossed bronze top that conjures images of the unique and ancient fauna that inhabit the islands.

Artistry is further evidenced in the striking 3D textile panels that grace the entrance to the dining area, courtesy of London-based artist Helen Amy Murray. These panels, depicting leaves caught in the wind, introduce an organic element that complements the tactile experience of the yacht's interior.

The upper deck saloon, centered around a semi-circular sofa, provides a cozy "abbraccio" or embrace, perfect for family movie nights or simply unwinding in comfort.

Accommodation

Somnium is equipped to welcome 10 guests, ensuring an intimate and exclusive experience on the water. The yacht boasts a thoughtfully arranged layout that includes five guest cabins.

The heart of the guest accommodations is the owner's suite, featuring an inviting seating area complemented by a private balcony where guests can bask in the gentle sea breeze and stunning vistas. Every detail in the owner's suite has been carefully considered, from the earthy and soft color palette to the subtle yet warm layers of materials, enhanced by mirrors finished in antique style for added depth and elegance.

The lower deck houses four additional guest cabins, each with its own distinct character and charm. Among these, the children's room is equipped with bunk beds that are as stylish as they are functional, designed to accommodate the evolving needs of a family as the children grow.

For the crew, Somnium provides accommodations for up to 14 that mirror the yacht's overall standard of excellence. 

Performance & Capabilities

Somnium's all-aluminum, full-displacement hull is a bold choice for a vessel of her size, usually reserved for yachts built for speed. However, Somnium defies expectations with an impressive cruising range of up to 4,000 nautical miles at a comfortable 12 knots, ensuring that her owners can embark on extensive voyages without the frequent need to refuel. 

At the heart of Somnium's mechanical prowess are her powerful MTU engines, which enable her to reach maximum speeds of approximately 14.5 knots. While not designed as the fastest yacht on the water, her engines are more than capable of delivering exceptional performance and reliability, further cemented by Feadship's exacting standards.

In terms of stability, Somnium boasts state-of-the-art stabilizers that ensure a smooth and comfortable experience for all onboard. Whether cruising through open seas or at anchor, guests can enjoy the yacht's numerous amenities without the discomfort of excessive motion. The stabilizers also enhance the onboard experience, allowing for undisturbed enjoyment of the yacht's luxurious interior spaces and expansive outdoor decks.

The yacht's aluminum construction not only contributes to her reduced draft, allowing access to shallower waters but also maximizes interior volume and usable space on board, a feature that discerning owners and guests will appreciate. The material choice reflects the owner's penchant for advanced engineering and fast cars, with design elements that echo the sleekness and cutting-edge aesthetics of high-end automobiles.

Amenities

The yacht features a well-equipped gym, allowing her guests to keep up their fitness regimes at sea. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort. Crowning the yacht is a spacious sundeck with an inviting spread of sunpads and deck jacuzzi which provides excellent views.
