The interior design project for yacht SD112 marks the debut of the studio Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel in the nautical environment. The architects used these 34 metres to reproduce the style of old yachts with a contemporary design and with a strong architectural personality.

“Instead of applying the minimalist opulence of Manhattan penthouses to boats, which is a trend in the field of yacht design, we recovered the tradition of naval interior design. Some elements were drawn from the world of navigation, related to ergonomics, cost of use, material quality, optimisation of space. This is what we are about”. Arch. Patricia Viel.

As a counter-trend, architects aim to reproduce the atmosphere of old, large yachts, which have nothing to do with ostentatious luxury. First of all, the project focused on revisiting the concept of space: the stern openings of the main deck and upper deck produce an extension between the stern cockpit and the living area, so that they are not separated. A unique setting which unexpectedly grows larger while stern windows disappear when they are open.The final result displays the strong oneness of the project which connects the internal and external space in a continuous flow, creating a large veranda from which the sea view can be enjoyed in a cosy environment.

The setting is provided a home flavour by spatial understanding, which is related to a total living concept and by the choice of especially designed furniture by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and partly offered by B&B Italia, Flexform, Hermès, Viabizzuno, Flos, Vitra, Mutina, Axor, Dedar e Ivano Redaelli with custom-made materials and finishings, created for this yacht.

Another peculiar aspect of this project was the idea of highlighting the shape of the boat from the inside, adjusting to its natural curves and geometry.
