Benetti Oasis 40M

A large yacht’s build time often means that, by the time it hits the water, newer designs are already coming through. So, if staying ahead of the curve is important these two highly sophisticated tri deck superyachts are for you.

Both the Benetti and Sunseeker are a glimpse into yachting future while being excellent standalone yachts. The Oasis 40 headlines with a groundbreaking aft design, spectacular glass helm and 4000nm range. The Sunseeker hits back with a full beach club, sharp styling, massive volume and a very useful mix of speed and range.

With similar dimensions, GRP build, five-cabin layouts and versatile semi-custom options on finish and design these two yachts are serious rivals.

Performance

The Sunseeker and Benetti are, in theory, both semi-displacement but whereas the Benetti has its emphasis on the displacement part of that design equation the Sunseeker, typically, has a real turn of speed.

The Benetti comes with twin V12 MAN 1400hp engines delivering a top speed of 16 knots and 4000nm at 12knots. The Sunseeker will hit 23knots powered by twin MTU 1950hp engines, adding a still useful 3200nm range at 12knots. The difference in range is mainly down to tankage, the Benetti carrying a massive 45,000lt (9,899gal) of fuel to the Sunseeker’s 30,000lt (6,600gal).

Given that, realistically, most Owner’s will cruise at 12 knots, be that on day cruises or long passages, there is little to separate these yachts on efficiency. In fact, going on the builders’ own figures, at 12knots the lower range Sunseeker is the more efficient at 112l/h to the Benetti’s 135l/h.

Interior

Both of these yachts have broad beams, indeed the Sunseeker’s 9.1m is around 1m more than most of the competition and still a useful 0.5m more than the Benetti. And beam really matters when it comes to onboard space.

Both main deck salons are vast, encased in glass and follow the very recent trend of retaining lots of relaxing open space to enjoy. But they are stylistically different. The Benetti is full of curves with two arcs of seating within a circular lounge, while the Sunseeker is more linear.

On the upper deck, the skylounges really benefit from yachts’ beam, pushing right outboard. The overall effect amplified by full-height glass. Each lounge can be laid out to suit the Owner’s wishes but there is certainly space for a bar, lounge and dining area if all three are wanted. Both skylounges also have full-width doors leading out to the upper deck aft, creating that perfect inside-outside flow of private, elevated social space.

Accommodation

Two excellent main deck Owners’ cabins, and two different layouts. The Benetti creates a true superyacht suite, the cabin and a lounge-study area enjoying separate zones, the layout then leading forward to a full-width dressing room and en suite beyond, it is a design that will make 60m yacht Owners envious. There is an additional space off the cabin’s entrance passage, intended for use as a gym but equally adept as a private office.

The Sunseeker opts for a more open-plan layout, its vast cabin enjoying two lounge areas set before windows that are so deep and wide they even beat the Benetti’s. The ensuite lies forward with a good walk-in closet to port. There is also a neat study at the entrance.

A central stairwell takes you below deck for the guest accommodation where four good ensuite cabins, two twin and two VIPs, are laid on as standard, although options abound here.

These crew operated yachts have eight berths in four bunked cabins, plus a very good mess area, below decks directly under the Owner’s cabin. Both yachts have proper captains cabins on the upper deck, aft of the helm.

Helm Station

The Benetti Oasis 40 is a special yacht, for several reasons. The helm is undoubtedly one of those reasons. Walking onto the bridge is a moment to savour. The uniquely brilliant design has a central throne-like smart seat set before floor-to-ceiling glass and a wraparound control pod with two screens at eye level and three above. Your Captain will love you, you will love the view. Visibility is panoramic.

Clean teak deck surrounds the helm seat, allowing it to glorify in its design, with big doors leading to the foredeck. Ensuring crew and guests can enjoy the view, seating is set respectfully to one side.

The Sunseeker can’t compete on wow-factor, but it can offer you a very good console and glass bridge with multiple touch screens. There is also a big seating area directly aft of the single Captain’s chair, with space for a good five or six people.

Deck Areas

Put simply, you are not going to find two better deck designs under 50m, and for different reasons. These tri-deck yachts have excellent sun decks, with space and luxury to the fore. The hardtop covers the central area for dining, where a bar and kitchen will look after guests very well, the Sunseeker making a feature of a spa pool with wraparound seating. Both yachts then have open lounges across the broad aft decks.

Down one level, we have the upper decks, running off the skylounges, with dining and lounging areas.

These yachts both lay on two of the finest and largest foredeck lounges around. True separate deck areas, they create the perfect retreat when moored stern-to in port, with lounge seating and sunpads, the Sunseeker delivering a particularly large sunbathing area.

The main deck aft is handled very differently on both yachts. The Sunseeker tries to lift this always underutilised deck by creating a bar area for guests to gather around, while the Benetti turns everything on its head, as we will see in the Beach Club section.

Flybridge

A superb place to enjoy days or nights on the water, this raised deck and driving position adds another dimension to yacht ownership and the driving experience.

Beach Club

The Oasis name relates to the specific aft design on this Benetti and the smaller 34, creating a tiered deck that steps gently down and out to the waterline. It is a complete rethink of main deck design, turning everything through 180 degrees and lowering the deck down, with the seating facing aft, overlooking a pool. Two hydraulic flanks then fold down to create extra width for the lower deck. The result is a massive terrace or oasis that has no business being on a 40m yacht.

Few yachts in this class can compete with the Oasis aft design, but the Sunseeker Ocean M42 is one. The British builder’s Ocean concept is, in part, about creating lavish stern terraces, the much smaller Ocean 90 Yacht a case in point. Here, though, you win a proper beach club, with an inner lounge leading to a fold-out terrace. The lounge is big, with space for seating and a bar. Skylights and a broad opening making this a perfect waterside retreat day or night.

Both yachts have the tender garage forward, athwartships, the Benetti pushing it further along, in front of the engine bay, which is how they have managed to steal so much low-level deck space aft.

Compare Layouts

These yachts utilise every square inch of what are very intelligent high-volume designs. The overall layouts are very similar, for guests and crew alike, with the aft decks the main differentiator. Whether you like the space of the open Oasis style or value a proper beach club will depend on how and where you cruise. It has to be said that both yachts, but particularly the Benetti, deserve praise for creating such lavish deck areas without impacting on interior space.
