Feadship’s 55m superyacht SHINKAI spotted on sea trials

The latest fully custom yacht from the Dutch yard is expected to be delivered in the New Year and includes the largest gyroscope system built to date and a 7.2tonne submarine.

The striking black and silver colors of Feadship’s 55m (180ft) superyacht SHINKAI have been spotted on sea trials in the North Sea, as she nears delivery to her experienced Owner.

YachtBuyer told you last month that the 974GT explorer yacht had been moved to the yard’s outside dock in Aalsmeer to begin her final outfitting. Once she is delivered she is set to put her explorer capabilities to test with a series of adventures, including taking on the North-West passage.

SHINKAI’s dramatic exterior design comes from designer Philippe Briand and his team at Vitruvius Yachts, who also worked on the naval architecture with De Voogt. Her interiors remain under wraps, although they have been described as “supremely comfortable” and come from the pen of Boutsen Design.

Previously known as Project 708, SHINKAI has been built as a true explorer yacht and is expected to have a 5,500nm range at 12 knots. She has been fitted with what Feadship is estimating to be the largest gyroscope system to date, measuring 3 x 3 meters (10ft x 10ft) and weighing 23 tonnes. It replaces the traditional stabilizer fins which could be damaged by underwater ice. The steel hull has been built to ice class and also includes an advanced WASSP sonar system to explore the ocean floor.

The Owner’s influence on the fully custom yacht can be seen by the striking mast and 7.2 tonne submarine on board. The submarine will be retrieved by a large crane with a reach of 8m (26ft).

SHINKAI is expected to be delivered to her Owner early in the New Year.
