Feadship’s 55m explorer yacht SHINKAI begins final outfitting

The 974GT yacht is getting ready for her delivery later this year and will include a 7.2tonne submarine and the largest gyroscope system built to date.

The latest custom Feadship, 55m (180ft) SHINKAI, has moved to the yard’s outside dock in Aalsmeer as she begins her final outfitting ahead of her delivery to her Owner later this year.

The Owner, who has “enormous experience of discovering the world by sea” has put his own very individual stamp on the 974GT yacht, adding a striking mast and the yacht’s very own submarine.

SHINKAI is also notable for the gyroscope system fitted within the hull, something that is being seen for the first time on a yacht of this size.

The gyroscope, which weighs 23 tonnes, is the largest built to date and adds a considerable amount of weight to the yacht, especially when combined with the 7.2-tonne submarine and the crane required for launching and collecting the submarine.

The challenge of working out how best to incorporate these hefty pieces of equipment fell to designer Philippe Briand and his team at Vitruvius Yachts who worked on the external design of SHINKAI and also the naval architecture with De Voogt. The yacht also features what the yard is calling a “supremely comfortable” interior, designed in close cooperation with Boutsen Design.

SHINKAI is expected to put her 5,500nm range, at a cruising speed of 12 knots, to good test with many adventures in the coming years including taking on the North-West passage. The steel hull has been built to ice class and also includes an advanced WASSP sonar system to explore the ocean floor.

SHINKAI is another example of the approach that marks Feadship out as one of the pedigree superyacht builders in the world, with each yacht very much an individual one-off project, with very high levels of owner involvement.

The yard has already delivered seven custom superyachts this year ranging from 49.65m (163ft) “Totally Nuts” to 94.75m (311ft) BLISS. According to YachtBuyer intelligence, once SHINKAI has been delivered it will leave one more Feadship set for delivery before the end of 2021, 70.92m (233ft) Feadship 820. It is also working on 118m (387ft) Project 1010, which is set to become the largest Dutch-built yacht upon its scheduled delivery in 2022.
