Classic 57m Feadship AMARA returns after extensive refit

The classic superyacht, launched in 1986, has completed a major refit at her home Feadship yard in the Netherlands that included the installation of a new helideck.

The classic 57.3m Feadship AMARA has taken to the seas again after an extensive refit at her home yard in Makkum.

One of the largest Feadships ever built at the time of her launch in 1986, AMARA’s current Owners purchased her in 2020 and, after enjoying a first season in Alaska, were keen to carry out a series of upgrades.

With Feadship being not only a leading superyacht design and construction yard but also a world leader in refit and maintenance the Owners chose to send AMARA back to her home yard in the Netherlands for the refit. The main part of the project being the installation of a new helideck, which was neatly finished with the AMARA logo as opposed to the standard H.

“Although it was a complex operation the results have been more than worth the effort,” says Captain Tim Rowland. “Our new deck is state of the art, designed in the same shape as the previous one while being strong enough to accommodate twin-engine helicopters.”

The refit also saw a rework of the sun deck to incorporate a new layout. A bulwark was removed to create an open plan deck and new teak was laid throughout this area, as well as on the foredeck and parts of the bridge deck.

Below decks the original main engines were given an extensive overhaul, the rudder shafts were replaced and the black/grey water holding tank in the engine room was replaced.

The interior was also given a fresh look with a wide selection of carpets, wall furnishings, furniture and blinds reupholstered or replaced.

This continues a developing trend of larger shipyards carrying out refit work on their yachts. Most recently Amels began refit work on its 52m (170.6ft) superyacht GRACE and at the end of 2020 Lurssen completed its largest-ever project, an 18-month refit of its 110m (361ft) superyacht KAOS.

Feadship has been equally active in this area. Last year 57.6m (189ft) superyacht W emerged from the yard with a striking silver hull, two new cabins and a series of other alterations after a ten-month refit. Other yachts Feadship has refitted in recent years include 67m (220ft) DRIZZLE, 97m (318ft) FAITH, 81m (266ft) AIR and 71.6m (235ft) UTOPIA.

AMARA is a good example of how Feadship’s builds have evolved over the years. YachtBuyer intelligence reveals that of the 81 yachts the Dutch builder launched between 1980 and 2000, the average length was 48.2m (158ft). In the same period since, from 2001 to 2021, it has delivered 84 yachts with the average length increasing to 63.1m (207ft).
