The luxury yacht market has always been at the forefront of innovation and sustainability, and the newly launched Sanlorenzo 50Steel superyacht is no exception.
This remarkable vessel, built by Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo, represents a significant step forward in the industry's journey towards environmental stewardship and sustainable cruising. The Sanlorenzo 50Steel features a groundbreaking green methanol fuel cell system, developed as part of the shipyard's commitment to its 'Road to 2030' initiative, aiming for a carbon-neutral future.
The Sanlorenzo 50Steel (also referred to as the 50Steel/171) is claimed as the first of its kind to incorporate a green methanol fuel cell system. The system, developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy, transforms green methanol into hydrogen, then into electricity, powering the yacht's hotel equipment — such as air conditioning and lighting — without storing hydrogen onboard. This allows for a carbon-neutral operation, greatly reducing the yacht's environmental impact by enabling it to generate electricity without the use of propulsion engines or diesel generators.
What sets the Sanlorenzo 50Steel apart, however, is not only its environmental credentials but also its unique interior configuration. The yacht's design accommodates the fuel cell system and technical areas without compromising guest spaces. This is achieved through a newly patented layout that offers a horizontal development of propulsion equipment and a new distribution of technical areas. Furthermore, this modification has allowed for additional guest amenities, such as the Ocean Lounge and a beach club.
The exterior design, developed by Zuccon International Project, features five staggered levels that create generous volumes and spacious areas both on deck and inside. This layout provides unprecedented ceiling heights for a 50m (164ft) yacht and a series of interconnected spaces that enhance the vessel's openness. Additionally, the interior directed by Sanlorenzo's art director Piero Lissoni, boasts a contemporary aesthetic, with unique features such as coffered ceilings and dark-paneled walls. Before delivery, the Sanlorenzo 50Steel will undergo outfitting at the builder's La Spezia facility in Italy.
Whether looking for a new Sanlorenzo 50Steel or a used model, this yacht promises a luxurious experience while contributing to a cleaner, greener planet.
