Volvo Penta proclaim the solution to difficult parking is solved.
Created by the Volvo subsidiary responsible for the creation of maritime gear and engines, the new self-docking yacht not only takes weather conditions into consideration, but can also dock into otherwise avoided spaces.
Still in need of human supervision, the vessel has the capability to constantly make adjustments according the waves and wind. Volvo Penta president Björn Ingemanson states that the self-docking yacht "can make the sea appear to stand still.".
Initially demonstrated during the Swedish leg of the Volvo Ocean Race in Gothenburg, spectators watched as the specially designed vessel backed into a space between two Volvo Ocean 65 yachts.
Measuring 72.6 feet, the Volvo Ocean 65s were easy obstacles for the self-docking yacht and the captain watched on as the automated system took over.
The Italian yachting company, Astra Yacht, has previously revealed a limited Boat Parking Assistance system which also enables yachts to park safely. However, the Volvo concept is more technologically advanced. Both systems proving that yachting companies are now looking forward to enhancing safety not only in transit but in docking too.
