Benetti Superyacht KINGDOM 5KR Hits Quay in Tunisia

Social media images reveal significant damage to the superyacht's hull, with initial reports suggesting mechanical failure or miscommunication as the cause of the accident.

The 86m (282ft) Benetti superyacht KINGDOM 5KR has collided with a quay in Bizerte, Tunisia, reportedly due to a loss of control by the captain when attempting to dock.

Images shared on social media show significant damage to the superyacht’s hull, and while an investigation is now underway, early reports suggest a possible mechanical failure or miscommunication may have contributed to the accident.

The extent of the damage to the yacht KINGDOM 5KR is still being assessed, but fortunately, no major injuries or structural issues have been reported to date. Authorities have cordoned off the area, and the investigation into the cause of the incident is still ongoing.

The Benetti superyacht, originally known as NABILA, was launched in 1980, and designed by Jon Bannenberg. Built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, the superyacht boasts a gross tonnage of 2,465 GT, meaning she would have sat comfortably within the YachtBuyer YB100 —  a true measure of the world’s biggest yachts —  at the time of her delivery.

Originally commissioned by Saudi billionaire Adnan Khashoggi, NABILA was named after his daughter. During Khashoggi's ownership, the yacht became famous not only for its size but also for its luxurious amenities, including a helicopter landing pad, a movie theater, and an impressive array of gold-plated fixtures. NABILA gained further notoriety when it appeared in the 1983 James Bond film ‘Never Say Never Again’, where it was featured as the villainous Maximillian Largo's vessel.

In the late 1980s, after a period of financial difficulties for Khashoggi, the yacht was sold to American real estate mogul and then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, who renamed it TRUMP PRINCESS. Trump owned the Benetti yacht for a few years before selling it to Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia in 1991. The prince, one of the richest men in the world, renamed the yacht KINGDOM 5KR, reflecting his investment company, Kingdom Holding Company, and his lucky number, 5. The ‘KR’ in the name stands for his children's initials.
