Presented at the Dutch Maritime Awards Gala on 7 November, the award was presented in recognition of Kommer Damen’s years of service to the maritime industry.
Originally launched in the Dutch town of Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Damen Shipyards arrived in 1927, with what we now know as Damen Yachting taken over by Kommer in 1969, from his family, in order to lead the shipyard on a new shipbuilding mission.
The move proved hugely successful for the shipyard and the rest, as they say, with today's Damen Yachting Group now operating 35 new build and repair yards and employing 12,000 people.
I am amazingly proud of my father to receive this special and well-deserved award. My father has been the visionary for this business and is still very involved.
With the acquisition of Amels in 1991, Damen strengthened its hand, reaching further into the large yacht sector with well-designed but also more accessible vessels, leading to the development of the highly distinguished Amels Limited Editions range.
Already a recipient of the Seawork Lifetime Achievement Award and the royal Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau, Kommer Damen still has a presence within the yard and maintains the family ethos the company is known for.
