Sterndrives are a good choice for sub 15m (50') yachts offering unbeatable power-to-weight ratios, good high-speed performance and economy whilst helping maximise the space available for interior accommodation.
The sterndrive itself is basically the gearbox and driveshaft housed outside of the yacht in a slippery hydrodynamic casing, connected to the inboard engine at the transom via a universal joint (or UJ) offering excellent trim and steerage and so control, at speed.
Good dynamics, or less drag through the water, allow for comparatively lower horsepower, lighter and so less expensive engines to deliver good top speeds, helping keep overall yacht costs down. Being sited at the very aft of the yacht, sterndrives also leave the area forward free for accommodation.
