The 26.2m expedition yacht Mamaluna was delivered to her owners in 2023 by Arksen Yachts. Her naval architecture and exterior design comes from the drawing boards of Rob Humphreys, while Design Unlimited is responsible for her interior design.

Design & Construction

Designed around a semi-displacement aluminium hull and superstructure she features a 6.84m beam and a 1.43m draft. The yacht is built over 2 decks with an internal volume of 125 GT (Gross Tonnes).

This was the second yacht built on the Arksen 85 design. Launched in May 2023 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in December 2023.

Exterior Design

Mamaluna stands as a true explorer yacht, crafted from robust aluminium with an emphasis on endurance and capability. The vessel's hull is striking in its bare aluminium finish, selected by the owner, which imparts a distinct character and hints at the yacht's formidable nature. The hull's material is not only durable, with 12mm thickness below the waterline and 8mm above, but it is also sustainably sourced, composed of 40 to 70 percent recycled aluminium.

Configurability is key in Mamaluna's design. The yacht's custom-built nature allows for owner-specific tailoring, from the layout to the on-deck amenities. This particular Arkson 85 is configured for warmer climates, boasting expansive outdoor seating areas for relaxation and al fresco dining. However, the yacht's flexible design framework can accommodate a multitude of preferences, from deck finishes to additional storage solutions.

Mamaluna features practical elements such as integrated lockers with drainage for wet gear and configurable deck spaces that can be adapted for various uses, including sunbathing or tender storage. The robust anchoring system is designed to exceed minimum safety standards, providing peace of mind in extreme conditions.

The yacht's deep bulwarks and pantograph doors enhance safety and accessibility while emphasizing the vessel's sturdy construction. The boat deck is reinforced to support a range of equipment, catering to both leisure and potential research expeditions. Additionally, the yacht is equipped with demountable cranes.

Interior Design

The interior design of Mamaluna is anchored in functionality, comfort, and resilience. The choice of materials and the layout reflect the yacht's dual nature as a vessel equipped for extended voyages while also providing a hospitable environment. Wood panels with light tones are prevalent throughout the interior spaces, offering warmth and a sense of continuity. The flooring is designed to be hard-wearing, able to withstand the rigors of open sea travel. Powered blinds offer control over natural light, allowing the interior ambiance to be adjusted as necessary.

The dining areas on Mamaluna are versatile spaces that cater to different occasions. On the upper deck, there is an adjustable table that serves as a dining spot, a day bed, or an additional berth if required. It is a communal area suited for social gatherings or as a place for discussion. The back end of the deck hosts another dining area, sheltered and equipped with a folding table to accommodate larger groups.

The bridge features an extensive array of navigation equipment and control systems that are accessible from a central position. The navigation suite includes radar, chart systems, and essential vessel management controls, all housed within easy reach. The yacht's operating system is comprehensive, offering insights into power management, engine metrics, fuel systems, and freshwater and wastewater management.

The galley is compact but well-appointed, designed to maintain functionality even in unfavorable conditions. It includes professional-grade Miele appliances, ensuring reliability and ease of use for the preparation of meals. Nearby, the bar area incorporates storage, a sink, and a boiling water dispenser, providing additional convenience for residents and guests.

Accommodation

Mamaluna offers six suites to accommodate up to 12 guests, emphasizing versatility and high standards throughout. The yacht's layout can be adapted to suit the needs of its owner, with spaces that can serve either as crew quarters or guest cabins, ensuring that every area maintains the same high quality of finish and amenity.

The owner's suite on Mamaluna features a dedicated desk area for work onboard, and hull windows that invite natural light. Storage solutions are ample, with wardrobes lining the suite for personal belongings. The en-suite bathroom features a spacious shower and fine fixtures.

Adjacent to the owner's suite is the captain's cabin, which is furnished to the same exceptional standard as the guest accommodations. This cabin includes a double bed and direct access to the yacht's operating systems, allowing for monitoring and control even from the comfort of one's quarters.

Guest accommodations are thoughtfully designed, with options for both double and twin configurations, offering flexibility for different guest preferences. The cabins include en-suite facilities, ensuring privacy and convenience. Furthermore, some cabins are fitted with beds that can be easily reconfigured, allowing for the transformation between a double bed setup and two singles, depending on guest requirements.

Mamaluna features watertight doors for each accommodation space, emphasizing the yacht's commitment to safety and the ability to maintain independent zones in the unlikely event of a breach. The yacht's design allows for easy modification, such as installing additional stabilization systems if desired.

Crew accommodations on Mamaluna mirror the high standards set throughout the vessel, ensuring that those who work on the yacht experience the same level of comfort as those they serve. Mamaluna can accommodate up to three crew.

Performance & Capabilities

Mamaluna is powered by twin Scania engines, each delivering 350 horsepower. These engines are carefully chosen for their ability to provide efficient and long-range cruising rather than high-speed performance. 

At a cruising speed of 9 knots, Mamaluna exhibits remarkable fuel efficiency, consuming a total of just 25 liters per hour. This efficiency, combined with a substantial fuel capacity of approximately 18,000 liters, allows the yacht to achieve an impressive range of around 7,000 nautical miles without requiring refueling. This capability positions Mamaluna as a true long-distance cruiser, capable of undertaking extended voyages across the oceans.

Mamaluna is equipped with a lithium battery bank that enables the yacht to operate many of its systems without the continuous use of generators. A solar array and high-output cruising alternators on the engines help maintain the battery bank charged. This setup allows for quieter and more environmentally friendly operation by reducing generator run time, particularly during overnight periods or when lesser loads are required.

The yacht features two reverse osmosis desalinators for water-making capabilities, ensuring redundancy and continuous fresh water supply. Additionally, Mamaluna has a sewage treatment plant and an oily water separator, highlighting the vessel's self-sufficiency and environmental consciousness.

Fuel management on Mamaluna is sophisticated, with bunker tanks for storage and day tanks for immediate engine use. A system of filters ensures that the fuel transferred to the day tanks is clean and free from contaminants. Manual pumping capabilities are built-in, allowing for fuel transfer between tanks in case of power failure.

The yacht's propulsion system includes V-drives that allow the engines to be positioned further forward, optimizing space and balance. Propellers and rudders are protected by skegs to mitigate damage from underwater obstructions. Additionally, the yacht's steering system can be operated hydraulically or electrically, with the option for manual steering directly from the rudder stocks in case of emergency.

Mamaluna is equipped with zero-speed fin stabilizers to reduce roll while at anchor or drifting. The yacht also has the capability to deploy flopper stoppers, which are metal plates that can be lowered into the water to dampen the roll when the vessel is stationary, thus providing additional stabilization without the use of power.

The yacht is built with numerous safety features, such as watertight and soundproof doors, climate-controlled battery rooms, and fire suppression systems. Redundancy is a key aspect of Mamaluna's design, with multiple systems in place to ensure that the yacht can continue to function even if one component fails. This includes duplicate generators, chillers, and hydraulic pumps.
