Malahne is an award winning 50.29m classic yacht delivered by British shipyard Camper & Nicholsons in 1937. Her naval architecture and exterior design comes from the drawing boards of Camper & Nicholsons, while Oliver Laws is responsible for her interior design.

Design & Construction

Designed around a full displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 7.92m beam and a 4m draft. The yacht is built over 4 decks with an internal volume of 475 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Construction started in mid 1936. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in August 1937 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in October 1937.

Exterior Design

Malahne's exterior design is a faithful representation of classic yachting elegance, restored and updated to meet contemporary standards without sacrificing the historical integrity of her original form. The work carried out by the design and restoration team focused on preserving the distinct 1930s character of the vessel while incorporating modern amenities for improved performance and comfort.

The hull and superstructure of Malahne feature a semi-faired finish, achieved through the use of flexible aluminum battens that conform to the yacht's original contours. This approach ensures a smooth appearance that is true to the yacht's vintage, complemented by a semi-gloss, off-white paint. The specific 70 percent gloss finish on the Awlgrip paint was carefully selected after extensive sampling to match the aesthetic of the era.

In keeping with the period style, the stainless steel rigging has been deliberately finished to appear less shiny, simulating the galvanized steel that would have been used in the 1930s. This was achieved by sourcing pre-finished, unpolished stainless wire, enhancing the authenticity of the yacht's appearance.

The deck hardware is a mixture of carefully researched replicas and redesigned pieces, with original John Roby portholes recast to meet modern safety standards. Other components were reconstructed from the original drawings found in the extensive archives of GL Watson & Co, ensuring that each element adheres to the yacht's historic blueprint.

Malahne respects her heritage while embracing the functional demands of contemporary maritime travel. Her silhouette and overall presentation are marked by a quiet dignity and a respect for the craft of yachting as it was in the past, with a careful balance of form and function that underpins her restored beauty.

Interior Design

Malahne yacht's interior, crafted by Oliver Laws, is respectful to the classic era of yachting. The firm's work, which includes notable projects such as the interiors of Claridges in London, brings a level of sophistication and historical accuracy to the vessel. A key feature aboard Malahne is the use of bespoke furniture, art, and antique silver, all contributing to an atmosphere that honors the 1930s aesthetic while incorporating modern comforts.

The attention to detail can be seen in the art deco theme that permeates the yacht's interior. This is characterized by a combination of prints and solid colors, plush furnishings, and prominent use of wood. Custom lighting fixtures, crafted from original 1930s materials, enhance the ambiance with a wonderful glow.

Technological amenities include a 47" HD TV in the Owner's cabin and a 42" HD TV in the upper deck library, both discreetly concealed within the cabinetry. Entertainment options are extensive, with a central movie database accessible through Apple TV, and iPads available in all cabins, paired with Bose cordless headphones for private viewing. Communication is facilitated by DECT cordless phones in public spaces and custom 1930s-style phones in guest areas, all connected through a modern Panasonic digital exchange.

The use of exotic and finely cut woods is a defining aspect of Malahne's interior spaces. The bookcase backdrops feature roto-cut Japanese tamo ash, and the master suite showcases sycamore veneers arranged in a chevron pattern. Other areas include European tiger oak in the dining saloon and macassar ebony with bronze insets at the bar. These materials not only provide visual interest but also convey a sense of historical continuity.

Furniture and decorations aboard the yacht are carefully selected to create an environment that feels collected rather than staged. Soft chenilles, down-filled cushions, and a balanced mix of prints and solids invite relaxation. Timber flooring and rugs, valanced pleated curtains, and elegant nickel hardware contribute to the overall deco-style environment that merges 1930s charm with contemporary comfort.

The designers also undertook the challenge of reviving original elements, such as the John Roby portholes, which were recast to meet current safety standards. Similarly, replica deck hardware was designed based on thorough research, and items were remade from original drawings found in the GL Watson & Co archive, ensuring authenticity in every detail.

Accommodation

Malahne comfortably accommodates up to 10 guests in well-appointed cabins, each designed with an art deco theme, bespoke furniture, and thoughtful touches that pay homage to the classic yachting era.

Malahne features a total of six guest cabins, including three doubles, two singles, and one twin cabin. Each cabin is equipped with modern amenities such as Apple iPads with Bose cordless headphones linked to a central movie database for individual entertainment, as well as DECT cordless phones for effortless communication.

The owner's suite, or master cabin, is a highlight of the guest accommodations, showcasing sycamore veneers arranged in an elegant chevron pattern, adding a sense of sophistication and warmth. This suite includes a 47" HD TV concealed within the cabinetry, providing a private entertainment experience without disrupting the cabin's aesthetic. The suite also boasts a pair of reconditioned 1950 wall phones, enhancing the vintage ambiance.

The vessel's interior design includes soft furnishings and striking woods, complemented by a bespoke lighting scheme utilizing original 1930s materials, creating an inviting atmosphere within each cabin. Guests can expect a harmonious blend of prints and solids in the soft-to-the-touch upholstery, further enhancing the sense of comfort.

For the crew, the Malahne offers thoughtfully designed quarters accommodating a team of 11, ensuring that service standards remain high and that guests' needs are promptly attended to. The crew accommodations have been reimagined by GL Watson & Co, featuring two single officer's cabins, a captain's cabin, and a new galley. The crew spaces respect the period detailing of Camper & Nicholsons joinery, while providing modern functionality for the crew's daily operations.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (C32 Acert) 472hp engines, motor yacht Malahne is capable of reaching a top speed of 14 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12 knots. With her 64,345 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. She has been fitted with stabilizers to increase on-board comfort when the yacht is at anchor, particularly in rough waters.
