Oceanco is working with a fellow Dutch-based studio to create nature-inspired designs in an attempt to improve the health and wellbeing of guests.
The shipyard is working with TANK on a series of ‘biophilic designs’ that take textures, colors, forms and shapes found in the ocean and bring them into its designs to create healthier living spaces.
Tommy Kleerekoper, Founding Partner of TANK, explains the thinking behind the concept: “We try to incorporate biophilic design in most of the things we do. The idea of biophilic design is that it comes from the fact that people actually feel better in nature.”
Along with integrating elements from the natural world, the design studio is also looking at using the spaces of a yacht in a more balanced way to reflect the way modern lifestyle has evolved.
“When we started designing we looked at the yacht not as levels, spaces, walls and boundaries, but we looked more at all the activities you want to do there.” says Miriam Zuurbier, Creative Director of TANK.
“We noticed that you can divide them into three groups of energy. The lowest is what we call recharge and retreat. The mid-level is more about things you constantly repeat, it's about cooking, working out and meeting up with your friends. The third level is where you really indulge, receive and recreate, meet the people, it's about connection.”
The idea is part of Oceanco’s NXT initiative. Announced by the yard in October 2020, it is a working group involving leading figures in the yachting, technology and design worlds to create a sustainable future for the superyacht world, with the ultimate goal of zero impact on the environment.
In March the yard revealed KAIROS, its first sustainable yacht concept as part of the initiative. The superyacht is developed around an E-Hybrid propulsion system that uses batteries as the primary source of energy.
According to YachtBuyer intelligence Oceanco has some seriously big projects in the pipeline. Of the six yachts it has planned for delivery over the next three years, five are over 100m (328ft) in length, including a 127m (416.6ft) schooner sail yacht that is rumored to be being built for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.
