Oceanco Yachts History & Heritage
Oceanco, a relative newcomer to the esteemed ranks of Dutch superyacht builders, emerged onto the scene in 1987. Founded by a group of South African investors, spearheaded by Richard Hein, who assumed the role of chief executive, the company's initial strategy involved constructing yacht hulls and superstructures in Durban, South Africa, before transporting them to The Netherlands for fit-out in specialized shipyards.
The debut vessel under the Oceanco brand was the 50m ANEDIGMI, later extended to 57m and renamed THE WELLESLEY. Constructed at Dorbyl Marine in Durban, the yacht was finished by Heesen in The Netherlands and delivered in 1993.
Oceanco underwent a significant shift in its business model in 2002 following its acquisition by Greek shipping magnate Theodore Angelopoulos. Under his leadership, the shipyard pivoted to focus on constructing exceptionally large vessels, measuring 80m and above, known as the Y Generation superyachts.
This transformation led to the establishment of Oceanco's Dutch shipyard in Alblasserdam. In 2010, Oceanco changed hands once more, this time acquired by its current owner, Omani businessman Mohammed Al Barwani. To date, Oceanco has built over 37 yachts, solidifying its reputation as a prominent player in the superyacht industry.
