Two big, high-volume flybridge boats that easily crossover into superyacht territory with semi-custom interiors, four cabins and serious cruising potential. These British and Italian rivals are of GRP construction, crew-operated, with fast planing hulls and top speeds of 26knots and 30knots, but for once the Sunseeker isn’t the faster boat.

Closely matched in terms of overall size, there are some interesting differences in layout and performance for buyers to chew on. Additionally, the Sunseeker is available in an Enclosed flybridge design that changes the salon design considerably.

Performance

The Ferretti’s planing hull will hit 30knots with twin 2600hp MTU engines, the Italian builder quoting a high 26knots as the cruising speed, although we think something lower and more sedate will be employed by Owners. The Sunseeker hits 26knots with an equally surprising 24knots cruising speed that also looks several knots too high.

But the speed figures aren’t the real story here, it is how these yachts reach them that is more interesting. The Sunseeker and its planing hull design weigh in at 85tonnes with a half load of fuel and water, the Ferretti at 77tonnes fully loaded (around 72tonnes half loaded), but the Sunseeker only needs twin 1900hp engines for its 26knots, suggesting an efficient hull is at work.

Interior

The Ferretti has the more straightforward interior layout, with its salon sticking to the tried and tested design that pushes lounge seating and cabinetry outboard leaving a clear walkway and line of sight that runs right forward. Both yachts are semi-custom, so that means plenty of choice on your final layout, furniture and finishing. The Sunseeker takes this idea and runs with it.

The 90 Ocean has multiple salon layout ideas, all of them good, even before you get to the Enclosed version of the 90 with no lower helm and one massive main deck social space.

The big options are an enclosed or open galley, the latter coming with bar stools to create a very friendly vibe. There is then a neat coffee lounge up by the helm, separate from the salon but still connected. The Ferretti’s help being slightly raised and separate, in a pilothouse design.

The use of glass is clearly more evident on the later Sunseeker design, with deeper windows, on and below decks, but the Ferrretti is not that far behind.

Accommodation

One of the big differences between these four-cabin yachts is the location of the Owner’s stateroom. The Sunseeker has all of its cabins on the lower deck, with a central stairwell leading to the Owner’s suite and two ensuite guest cabins, creating a family feel, and an excellent forward VIP running off a separate stairwell by the lower helm, a private cabin ideal for visiting friends.

The Ferretti 920 was one of the first yachts to offer a main deck Owner’s suite at this length, a design that creates a private elevated position for the Owner but also frees up space below decks for guests and crew, plus it offers the option of a five-cabin layout, something the Sunseeker cannot do. The Ferretti’s superb full-beam stateroom has an intelligent design, creating a large walk-in closet and forward ensuite.

Below decks, the Ferretti has the option of a three or four-cabin layout, the three-cabin option being all ensuite.

As crew-operated yachts, both have separate quarters, the Sunseeker aft with four berths in two cabins and a small mess area. The Ferretti main deck Owner’s cabin design allows space for a larger crew quarters forward with a good mess and three cabins including a decent captains’ cabin.

Helm Station

Both yachts have flybridge helm stations, the Ferretti with guest seating alongside the helm and navigators positions, the Sunseeker with a sunpad lounge. But we then have different setups for these lower helm stations. The Sunseeker has its helm feeling part of the yacht, with a neat raised lounge nearby. On the Enclosed version of the 90 Yacht, the lower helm is removed entirely, as is the galley bulkhead, the salon pushing right forward to the windscreen. 

The Ferretti design requires the helm to be elevated, into a pilothouse design. This allows the salon, galley and Owner’s cabin to run across the main deck, creating a snug and purposeful helm.

Deck Areas

Sunseeker’s Ocean design runs across several models and is about many wonderful things but one of its key features is delivering a luxurious stern section that gets guests close to the water. On the 90 the Ocean design delivers a deep broad platform with an innovative (and patented) dual action fold-out seat and storage garage, the tall flanks on either side of the swim platform creating a barbecue and bar. Steps lead up to a main deck aft that feels very much the waterside terrace, its glass bulwark allowing an unobscured view over the swim platform and sea beyond. 

The Ferretti has a very functional stern, focused on tender deployment, the garage and hydraulic platform making launch and recovery easy.  Above, the main deck aft is broad and inviting, with a deep sofa and a large dining table. 

Both yachts have excellent forward deck lounges, the Ferretti’s elevated above the Owner’s cabin.

Flybridge

In its standard open design, the Sunseeker’s cohesive flybridge design makes the most of the huge amount of space up top, with a central lounge and bar, forward sunpad and a pool across the open aft deck. The Ferretti has a similar forward design, with a neat bar and lounge, the aft deck left clear for the Owner to layout as they wish. The 90 Ocean Enclosed creates an upper deck with the helm sharing its climate-controlled space with a lounge, the aft deck left open for sunlovers.

Beach Club

A true beach club should be a waterside lounge and terrace. Usually at the stern, a beach club might open on one, two or three sides of the yacht. It should be practical, able to withstand plenty of use, watersports and saltwater, but also luxurious, creating a spectacular retreat day or night.

Compare Layouts

These broad-beam, high-volume flybridge yachts share many traits but are defined by their different approach to deck and interior layout. The Sunseeker has all of its cabins below decks, allowing a long spread of versatile and social main deck, enhanced further if you opt for the enclosed flybridge, Closed 90, and do away with the lower helm. The Ferretti was a main deck Owner’s cabin pioneer at this LOA, a design that also creates an elevated pilothouse helm station and the space to create a four or five-cabin layout with up to four guest cabins below decks. On deck, the Fererretti has its tender garage, but the Sunseeker enjoys that vast aft terrace, the tender sitting on the hydraulic platform.
