Design & Construction
Designed around a full displacement steel hull and a GRP superstructure she features a 9.1m beam and a 2.64m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 496 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in late 1996. This was the third yacht built on the Golden Bay Series design. Launched in July 1998 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of Air reflects a straightforward elegance. The raked bow contributes to both its aesthetic appeal and functional performance. The deck, constructed from high-quality teak, provides a durable and attractive surface for guests. The hull and superstructure are both painted a classic white, creating a cohesive and clean look. The black boot top and antifoul colors offer a sharp contrast, adding to the vessel's visual appeal without unnecessary embellishment.
The upper deck includes an extended radar arch and a permanent framework for awnings, providing ample shade. Despite these structures, there remains a large open-air living space equipped with a bar, barbecue, Jacuzzi, seating area, sun mattresses, and an outdoor dining table. One deck below, there is a large oval table for formal alfresco dining, complemented by a bar and servery.
The aft part of the main deck offers a shaded outdoor area, while those preferring sun exposure can enjoy a semicircular settee and round table located just forward of the bridge. The design intentionally avoids clutter; the only visible small crew boat is discreetly tucked away on the top deck.
Two rigid-hulled inflatables and two jet-skis are ingeniously stored in an aft garage. The RIBs are adapted to fit one above the other in a minimal space, with the top boat suspended from a twin-beam horizontal crane extending 7 meters aft of the transom door, which also serves as a boarding and bathing platform. After launching the boats, the jet-skis are moved into position for deployment by the same crane.
Interior Design
The interior design of Air reflects a blend of modern aesthetics and functional elegance. The materials used throughout the yacht include high-gloss finishes, fluted and bevelled mirrors, and antique gold surfaces. The dining room stands out with its brightly colored chairs, each upholstered in different suede shades, set against a backdrop of sophisticated shapes and limed oak joinery. The carpet features pixelated, vibrant colors, reminiscent of Pacific wildlife, while the table and sideboards are finished in maroon-stippled lacquer with a broad gold-leaf band.
The main saloon, accessible through double sliding doors of white fluted lacquer outlined with raised gold squares, focuses on a cooler tone with white leather upholstery. Brightly colored scatter cushions and a carpet continue the yacht's colorful theme. A high-gloss baby grand piano occupies a central position, supported by a comprehensive audio and video system concealed in cabinets along the starboard side.
In the main lobby, the stairway walls are surfaced with hundreds of fluted and bevelled mirrors, reflecting and splintering light to create a bright atmosphere. The open-tread stairs are hung on a framework of high-gloss stainless steel, leading to a small lobby area.
Accommodation
Air offers accommodation for up to 12 guests. The owner's suite is strategically positioned on the upper deck, a location typically reserved for an upper saloon or sky lounge. This elevated placement allows for expansive views and enhanced privacy. The suite includes an adjoining office, a spacious dressing room, and an en-suite bathroom featuring a marble-bordered bath and a steam shower.
The bedroom itself spans the full width of the superstructure, providing an exceptionally large and well-lit space with king-sized bed and large rectangular windows on either side. A unique feature is the panel directly opposite the bed, which can slide down at the touch of a button to reveal either a window with views of the stern or a flat-screen television.
On the main deck, Air features two VIP staterooms, each identical in size and outfitted with double beds. These staterooms are particularly spacious and come with separate dressing rooms and large bathrooms equipped with full-sized baths. Each VIP room has its own distinct color theme, adding a unique touch to the accommodation.
The lower deck houses four additional guest cabins, comprising two single cabins and two doubles or twins. While slightly smaller than the VIP staterooms, these cabins are still beautifully finished. The two single cabins are equipped with showers rather than baths, and the aft pair are slightly larger with dressing lobbies, making them suitable for twin use.
To ensure the smooth operation of the yacht, Air is planned to accommodate a crew of 10. The captain’s cabin is conveniently located adjacent to the bridge. The remaining crew members share twin cabins situated on the lower deck forward. This area also includes a capacious crew mess and a laundry room. The yacht design incorporates linking stairways on the port side, allowing the crew to move between decks without passing through guest areas, thereby maintaining guest privacy.
