A new era dawns with unveiling of first Amels 60

The Dutch yard celebrated a milestone moment as the first Amels 60 made her way out of the dry dock she entered last summer for her outfitting.

Amels has celebrated what it called the dawning of a new era, as its inaugural Amels 60 model emerged from the build shed for the very first time.

The 60m (197ft) superyacht made her way out of the dry dock at Damen Yachting’s Vlissingen shipyard after arriving there last summer for outfitting. It gave onlookers a first look at her eyecatching metallic Pebble Grey hull and Matterhorn White and Super Jet Black superstructure.

Damen Yachting’s Managing Director Rose Damen stressed the importance of the occasion: “A new era has dawned on our Amels Limited Editions. The proven platform and Amels pedigree our Owners expect - shaped for the future” she said. “This is an incredible moment not only for the Owner and his team, but for everyone who has been involved in bringing the Amels 60 to life. The next generation starts here. A star has emerged.”

The distinctive lines and geometric shaping of the exterior of the Amels 60 come from Espen Øino, the first Limited Editions design the Norwegian has worked on.

“The design process is somewhat different, as one is designing not for an individual client but rather for a group of potential clients, so a proper market research as to what this target group is looking for is fundamental for the success of the project as a whole” he explained.

“Considering that five Amels 60s have already been sold prior to launching the first vessel, this is a testimony to Amels and their in-depth research from which the design found its inspiration. As a design studio, having worked mostly with custom-designed yachts, we are very enthusiastic and proud to be part of this very exciting programme.”

The 830GT interior comes from British studio, Winch Design, and has a strong emphasis on space throughout with a large sun deck, swim platform and folding Owners Suite balcony. There is even space for a 9m (29.5ft) luxury tender to be stowed on the foredeck.

“The harmonious custom interiors capture the feel and style of a relaxed family home on the water, promoting a ‘calm atmosphere and involuntary relaxation’. For the most part, we have used pure and natural materials to emphasise the relaxed ‘home at the beach’ spirit of the interior. However, we have also added layers of surface interest to materials such as stones and timbers to create unique and tactile finishes.” Jim Dixon, Director Yachts & Aviation at Winch Design, explains.

The first Amels 60, being built for an experienced Amels customer, is expected to be delivered later this Spring.

Introduced in 2019, the new Amels Limited Editions redefines the look of the builder’s hugely successful Limited Editions range, of which more than 40 have been delivered since 2007. The new Amels 60 looks set to continue this popularity, with the sale of a fifth hull of the model confirmed in the last quarter of 2021.

One of the main reasons the semi-custom built yacht series has proved popular is that it offers a mix of custom and platform build techniques to reduce delivery time from years to as little as a few months.
