Marina de Portimao Expands to Attract More Superyachts

Enhanced facilities set to attract more luxury yachts to Algarve Coast

Portugal’s Algarve coast boasts several marinas, but few can accommodate the larger of the superyachts. Among these, Marina de Portimão is expanding its facilities of its deep water location to attract more yachts up to 50m.

A commissioned study indicates that numerous sailing and power superyachts are interested in visiting Portimão, but the current lack of berths drives them to other Mediterranean marinas.

Currently, Marina de Portimão has 620 moorings and can accommodate yachts up to 50m (164ft). The deep waters allow for drafts up to 4m (13ft). To meet the anticipated demand, Portugal’s Secretary of State has announced expansion plans alongside the marina manager, the city’s mayor, and Algarve tourism and development officials.

Marina de Portimão plans to address this by building a new, fixed breakwater on its north side, accommodating 18 yachts up to 45m (148ft). Simultaneously, a new fixed breakwater will be constructed on the south side, extending from an existing jetty. This breakwater will cater to smaller vessels up to 20m (66ft) and is urgently needed due to the current floating breakwaters' inability to protect yachts in the basin during storms. These storms frequently damage the marina infrastructure.

Once completed, visiting yacht owners, guests, and crew will have much to explore. Located along the Arade River, the marina is sheltered from prevailing winds and is near world-renowned beaches, historic forts and churches, and an old city center. Faro International Airport is just a 30-minute drive away. The waterfront also offers multiple restaurants known for their grilled sardines, which contribute to the city's fame.

Meanwhile, Marina de Portimão isn't the only Portuguese facility targeting superyachts. The new Nova Marina, set to open on the Algarve coast later this year, also aims to attract this luxury yachting sector.
