Regal Boats 42 FXO Review (2022 Edition)

The Regal 42 FXO is challenging preconceptions about flybridges, especially concerning speed. If you've ever dismissed the idea of buying a flybridge for lacking the punch of a sports cruiser, it might be time to think again.

At Fort Lauderdale Boat Show 2022, we spotted a boat not seen often in Europe - a 42-foot flybridge boat with triple outboard engines. The Regal 42 FXO is fast in the flybridge category, with speeds that can push beyond 45 knots. It's so fast, measures had to be taken to cap its speed. This yacht isn't confined to one layout either; offering a coupé style with sunroofs or you can even opt for inboard engines - catering to varying requirements.

To my eye, the 42 edges out the smaller model in the range, the 38, in terms of how space and function are balanced - even if it does come with a bigger price tag of around $280,000 more. As we investigate what makes the Regal 42 FXO a standout at the show and possibly the fastest flybridge ever made, let's see if this yacht is more than just a swift ride.

Design & Build

At first look, the Regal 42 FXO might not strike you as roomy, given its emphasis on performance. Looking at the layout reveals a different story. The boat integrates storage into living spaces without compromising on its looks. Changing the use of potential dead space into a vast storage void at the push of a button shows how Regal has used every inch of the yacht. The cockpit's layout, though simple, is efficient, offering comfortable seating and dining options, supplemented by an outdoor grill and fridge -neatly integrating creature comforts in limited quarters.

The sliding door to the owner’s cabin, for example, is a clever solution to space constraints. Similarly, the bifolding door to the guest cabin is a continued smart design choice. The use of deep drawer refrigeration in the galley, induction hobs, and quality finishes throughout the interior signify a no-compromise approach to quality. On the exterior, the yacht continues with its nice teak table on the Flybridge and the strategic use of biminis for shade - materials chosen for how they look and for their outside durability.

The Regal 42 FXO has some nice finishing touches. The cream leather seating, the swivel knob on the steering wheel for ease of manoeuvring, and even the thoughtful addition of a footrest at the helm station show an attention to detail that will elevate your experience onboard.

Few boats in its class offer the same level of performance without compromising on living spaces or practical features. The yacht's storage solutions, efficient use of space, and attention to detail make it a unique option amongst other Flybridge boats.

Interior Accommodation

The galley is to the starboard side on the main deck and it does well for a boat of this size. It would have been a challenge to integrate a full-height fridge so instead there are two deep drawer-fridges. Accompanied by a microwave, a bit of additional storage, and an induction hob, the galley, though not enormous, is well-equipped to knock up a tasty breakfast or an easy dinner.

Opposite, on the port side, there's a simple dinette with U-shaped seating, surrounding a table and upholstered in cream leather. There isn't a huge amount of space and they've had to use it wisely.

Owner's Cabin

There's a real clever stroke down here to save space - A sliding door to the owner's cabin, avoiding the ungainly swing of traditional doors without gobbling up precious space. The cabin boasts a decent-sized double bed, complete with substantial storage beneath. An overhead hatch is a great feature - providing natural light and ventilation.

The setup for the heads is flexible; there's a standard single head with direct cabin on the boat I reviewed.  Strangely there's a secondary galley in this version. I see it as a bit of overkill, considering the galley above - strange choice. The alternative option for this space is as a wet room, granting guests their private bathroom -I think that would be a better use of this area.

Guest Cabin

The guest quarters continue the theme of intelligent use of space. A bifold door maximises accessibility without encroaching on the room. I can just about stand up in the lobby but headroom here is a bit of a squeeze, making it more of a clambering into bed scenario rather than a room you'd lounge in. But, the bed's versatility shines, offering configurations as either a generous double or two singles. Again, it really is just crawling space only but once you're in, it should be comfortable.

Helm Station

Starting with the interior helm, it's a compact setup behind the galley, but it's brimming with clever details. The double bench is a bit snug, but it has a bolster function, allowing you to stand and lean comfortably with a flip-up footrest to boot. Sitting or standing, you're in for a smooth ride, with a steering wheel that features a swivel knob for effortlessly swinging those massive outboards from side to side. At slow speeds, the joystick becomes your best friend. With intuitive controls, it makes maneuvering this sizable yacht easy, especially with the added precision of a bow thruster to counteract wind. The helm is kitted out with two Garmin MFD screens - where you can plot a course, keep an eye on the radar, or monitor engine stats, these screens are customizable to show just what you need.

Upper Helm

Now, let's pop up to the upper helm, the best area for driving. It mirrors the main helm's functions but adds that extra bit of elevation for improved sightlines - a treat when you're cruising at the healthy top speed of 45 knots or enjoying the efficiency of a 30-knot cruise. The flexible navigator bench is a nice touch, accommodating your crew or guests. This station is equipped with the same intuitive joystick and dual Garmin setup as the lower helm for consistency in control.

On Deck

The first thing that will catch your eye is the powerful setup of Triple Yamaha V8 425hp outboards, a clear indicator that this yacht means business on the water. There's the option to switch these out for IPS drives and you would get a full-length bathing platform and a place to store away a half-decent tender. However, let's be real, the whole point is to go for the triple Yamahas, giving you the status of owning the fastest flybridge on the water. But you do have the option for pod drives, if you want.

Tucked behind the outboard engines, you'll find ingeniously integrated storage, popping open with gas rams. It can store fenders, lines, and the like. And if you had the outboards installed and you're wondering about the space left where the IPS setup would be, don't worry. With the press of a button, the whole transom lifts, revealing a truly enormous storage void - incredibly handy.

Access to the cockpit is up the port side - only on one side. The cockpit is quite compact but it's used well. An L-shaped seating arrangement is right here for comfortable gatherings, with a table that slots in ready for al fresco dining. Canopies are on hand to enclose the open space into an extension of the saloon, perfect for when the weather decides to play spoilsport.

Next to the seating is a bar area, complete with a grill and a fridge underneath to supplement what's going on up at the flybridge.

Flybridge

Heading up to the flybridge on the Regal 42 FXO, you're greeted by a space that does not have enormous dimensions but it has a clever layout. The focus here was on maximizing the available area without making it feel cluttered. There's a bimini overhead, providing must-have shade on sunny days, a good choice given there's no hardtop option. Yet, this isn't a downside; the bimini's ability to fold away neatly when not needed is a nice touch, ensuring that versatility depending on the weather or just how your feeling.

Next to the stairs, you'll find a cozy wrap of seating accompanied by a lovely teak table. This table has the ability to double in size, transforming into a dining spot where you can enjoy meals under the open sky. While there's no wet bar, the design still integrates a fridge under the seating here. This means your cold drinks is never too far away, saving you from clambering downstairs.

Forward, there's the upper helm and the seating here is cleverly designed with a two-way backrest, you can flip it back and join the conversation or eat at the table. And just beside the helm, a small perch offers a bit of extra lounging space.

Side Decks & Foredeck

The side decks, are not massively wide but they do feature a handy little toe rail providing a bit more security for moving around. The rails are a bit low for my liking and are really more at knee level - they are helped by a full-length rail running along the superstructure. So when you find yourself needing to swing out a bit to navigate past the boat's structure, you've always got something solid to grab onto - a nice touch.

Moving forward to the foredeck, the layout here is quite simple, yet it boasts a few clever details that raise a smile. Flip-up backrests change this area into a comfortable spot for lounging, and the inclusion of a bimini offers a shady retreat from the sun’s blazing heat, a real treat for those who aren't fussed about tanning. The anchor locker area, nicely integrated into this space, features speakers, allowing the boat's soundtrack to extend to the very front. It’s a lovely addition for those laid-back moments at anchor. Additionally, the split anchor locker design, with accessible chain and windlass plus side lockers, is a practical solution that keeps the area tidy and functional.

Our Verdict

For the Regal 42 FXO, size isn't the sole determinant of its appeal. It's a clever package - maximising all the space it has. The monstrous engine power will grab all the headlines, boasting performance but I think it's the attention to detail in areas that aren't as immediately eye-catching that makes this yacht different. The choice of propulsion will naturally limit where this boat appeals but this size of flybridge boat is being overlooked by many shipyards, so well done Regal for keeping it alive.

Rivals to Consider

The Rodman Spirit 42 Fly with a strong construction and Spanish flair, might have a shallow draft ideal for venturing into waters off-limits to others, but it doesn’t quite match the Regal’s top performance. If you want a burst of power on the open sea, the Regal shouldn't be underestimated, especially if you're more focused on exhilarating speed rather than the stability the Rodman offers.

The Sessa Marine Fly42 shares a similar shallow draft to the Rodman, offering access to niche waters that deeper vessels might shy away from. Known for its Italian craftsmanship and luxurious finishes, the Sessa is definitely a great-looking boat and handles well. However, the Regal Boats 42 FXO proves to be a better bet for those who are not fussed about navigating shallow channels and prioritise speed and thrilling performance.

Then there's the Riviera 39 Open Flybridge, which is all about long-haul comfort with an impressive range of 2,324 nautical miles. True to its Australian heritage, the Riviera is built to handle tough conditions so it can tackle long distances. If you're planning on epic voyages, the Riviera’s ability to keep you going is absolutely lovely, especially for fishing enthusiasts who need a stable platform.
