Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 14.5m beam and a 3.99m draft. The yacht is built over 4 decks with an internal volume of 2,984 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a touch and go heli-pad.

Construction started in mid 2013. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in October 2016 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in February 2017.

Exterior Design

Barbara showcases fluid lines and a harmonious interplay of shapes that set her apart from conventional designs. Her organic contours are a departure from traditional maritime architecture, offering a refreshing and unparalleled silhouette on the water.

The dark hull of Barbara is immediately eye-catching, a bold contrast against the shimmering seas, while the superstructure's curves add a sense of movement and grace to the yacht's profile. This innovative design is not only visually appealing but serves a functional purpose, as there are no hard edges to interrupt the yacht’s flowing form. The concave chamfers create a subtle shadow effect that enhances the yacht's dimensionality and visual intrigue.

A distinct feature of Barbara's exterior is the extensive use of glass, which is cleverly integrated to avoid any discordance with painted surfaces. The purity and flatness of the glass elements, including the large areas of glazing and the glass corners, offer a level of perfection that paint alone could not achieve. The reflective quality of the glass complements the yacht's white painted aluminum superstructure, creating a sophisticated and seamless appearance that is both modern and timeless.

The yacht's layout, developed in close collaboration with Azure Yacht Design and Naval Architecture, further emphasizes her individuality. The design's intent was clear: to break free from any existing template and create a custom arrangement that reflects the owner's vision. The result is a yacht that balances private and shared spaces with innovation and style.

On the upper deck terrace, Barbara boasts some of the largest doors ever installed by Oceanco. These automated, weather-tight doors, crafted by German glass specialist Tilse, are nearly four meters tall and slide open on an invisible track, allowing natural light and fresh air to flood the interior spaces.

Not to be overlooked, Barbara's helideck serves a dual purpose, transforming into an outdoor cinema for entertainment under the stars.

Barbara ethos is blending luxury with the spirit of adventure—a harmonious extension of the owner's wishes.

Interior Design

Imagined by the renowned Australian designer Sam Sorgiovanni, the vision for Barbara's interior was to encapsulate a tranquil, resort-like ambiance reminiscent of the serene spas found throughout the Asia Pacific region. This is achieved through the meticulous selection of organic materials and the incorporation of unique and sustainable elements that contribute to the yacht's distinct sense of place and purpose.

Upon stepping inside Barbara, one is enveloped by a sense of comfort and relaxed elegance. The use of bamboo in the ceilings and floors immediately introduces a warm, naturalistic quality that is both inviting and intriguing. The neutral stones complement the woodwork, maintaining a pure and refined aesthetic throughout the vessel. The attention to texture and material richness is evident, with an array of exotic materials such as pufferfish skin and water buffalo horn adding layers of depth and interest to the interior spaces.

Sorgiovanni's commitment to crafting an environment that is friendly and relaxing is showcased through the careful curation of the yacht's furnishings and the artwork that adorns its walls. The interior and most of the furniture onboard were designed by Sorgiovanni himself, ensuring a cohesive and individualized character that is difficult to replicate. Each piece tells a story, adding to the yacht's narrative as a floating retreat that respects and reflects the natural world.

One of the yacht's most striking architectural features is the glass elevator/staircase, which is wrapped in a root system made from teak and stainless steel—inspired by the forests of Bali. This stunning installation is not only a functional element of the yacht's design but also an art piece, signifying the intricate relationship between human creativity and nature's own designs.

Nature Squared, a Swiss company known for its sustainable approach, worked closely with Sorgiovanni Designs to provide materials that foster environmental, economic, and social well-being. Among these is the use of frog leather, a sustainable by-product, which is carefully treated and used on bed frames, showcasing a patchwork of natural color variations. This thoughtful use of materials continues with "sea urchin dots" framing artwork, duck eggshell inlays providing texture to seating areas, and water buffalo horn enhancing the tactile experience of interacting with the yacht's features.

Barbara's commitment to sustainability extends to the living creatures onboard. A carefully maintained aquarium, created by Living Color Aquariums, serves as a peaceful and intriguing visual focal point, separating the formal dining area from the saloon. The presence of the fish tank is a constant reminder of the yacht's connection to the sea and the life it harbors.

Accommodation

Barbara features an exclusive owner's suite that is self-contained, complete with a central skylight that floods the space with natural light, enhancing the bespoke silk carpets with patterns of retreating waves.

In addition to the owner's suite, Barbara accommodates her guests in unparalleled style and comfort. Six additional guest cabins and suites are located on the main deck, each designed to provide an intimate and relaxing environment. Completed by the adept hands of F/List, the fit-out company responsible for the interiors, these spaces are finely appointed with exquisite materials and finishes that evoke a resort-like ambiance.

The bridge and several crew cabins for up to 32 crew are located on the same deck as the superyacht office and the upper saloon.
