Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 47'5" beam and a 11'4" draft. The yacht is built over 4 decks with an internal volume of 2,115 GT (Gross Tonnes).
The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in May 2019 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in September 2019.
Exterior Design
Excellence, the sixth yacht of the same name, presents a striking silhouette on the water, thanks to her innovative exterior design. With her sharp reverse bow and expansive glass windows that resemble a pair of aviator sunglasses, Excellence is a head-turning beacon of modern yachting design.
The yacht's exterior design is built around several key features. The reverse bow, known as the "eagle bow", is a direct homage to the beak of an American eagle with razor-sharp lines swooping back a full 10 meters before joining the main deck. This unique bow design was not only a stylistic choice but also a technical challenge that required Abeking & Rasmussen to invest in rigorous tank-testing and perfecting the naval architecture behind it. The stem, close to the waterline, is machined from a solid piece of stainless steel before it flares and blooms outwards, a novel structure that required a complete rethink of mundane tasks like launching and recovering anchors.
Excellence also features a bulbous bow to increase buoyancy forward and improve wave-breaking. The result is a yacht that handles as well as a traditional hull shape, even in significant wave heights of 8.5 metres.
The exterior of Excellence is also marked by expansive areas of glazing, which posed another set of challenges. The mirrored external skin of the yacht, formed by five-metre-tall sheets of glass, required German technology and engineering to solve the problem of maintaining rigidity without distorting the mirror finish. The end result is a stunning, mirror-like surface that reflects the surrounding landscapes.
Further enhancing the yacht's sleek look, life rafts are cleverly hidden in a bulwark cabinet to maintain the yacht's clean lines. Ventilation louvres are also discreetly concealed behind mirror-finish stainless steel, seamlessly blending with the windows. Even the exterior doors were designed to account for the superstructure's bevel and curvature, each set using a slightly different mechanism to swing or glide open.
Interior Design
The unifying theme for the interior is luxury cars, a tribute to the owner's successful career in car dealerships. The boat has car detailing throughout ranging from the black-and-white concentric circles on the saloon floor and ceiling that recall the white-wall tyres of a 1950s car, to the double-stitched leather detailing in the cabins.
Every public space in the accommodation area is adorned with rare marbles, precious woods such as tamo ash, blue ombre rippled sycamore, and amboyna burr, along with novel leather finishes. Yet, practicality is never far from the surface, all the high-tread areas are in limed oak, not vulnerable carpet.
The interior strikes a balance between bright splashes of colour and dignified coffee tones, mirroring the aesthetic of one of the owner's favourite sports cars. Noble woods and fine Italian leathers are utilised throughout, along with a stand-out material on board - marble. There are more than 30 different marbles on Excellence, predominantly golden onyx. The honey-toned stone, quarried in Chile, is used in abundance, from the main guest corridor to the his-and-hers owner's bathrooms.
The use of mirrors throughout the interior extends sight lines and broadens perspectives. In the main saloon, mirrors behind the louvres make the casing around the ventilation shafts disappear. Thin mirrored strips all the way around the top of walls in the cabins, fool the eye into seeing more space. The yacht also garnered a Judges' Commendation for lighting at the 2020 Boat International Design and Innovation Awards, thanks to the clever use of indirect lighting.
Excellence is designed to cater to guests' needs while meeting the owner's tastes. A library/office was added to facilitate work, a gym on the main deck is bigger than those on his previous boats, and the spa area is bright with great views out of the sauna through huge windows. The yacht also boasts a dedicated nine-seat cinema.
Despite the richness of the interior finish, the atmosphere on board is relaxed and convenient. The main saloon, with deep cream-coloured sofas and a 1.8-metre-diameter coffee table, is designed for comfort. The owner requested golden onyx for the rim of the wooden table to resist wear. On the bridge deck, aft of the 14-seat outdoor table, there is a relaxed bar, sunken into the deck so it doesn't block the view. The swim-up pool on the main deck has removable bar seating in it, with more stools on the other side of the bar. The pool also spreads dappled light onto the beach club below through a glass floor panel, creating a welcoming ambience for guests as they board. The tender garage, fitted out with a bar, comfortable seating and lined with the yacht's best toys, is designed to whet the guests' appetite for the delightful experiences that lie ahead.
Accommodation
Excellence offers luxury accommodation for up to 14 guests across seven well-appointed cabins.
The owner’s suite sets a new standard in luxury yacht accommodation. It features Macassar ebony offset by wool carpets with crocodile pattern tufting by Oliver Treutlein, and woven silver wire that gives the window mullions a precious carbon fibre look. The his-and-hers owner’s bathrooms glow with the golden hue of Chilean-quarried honey-toned onyx, a recurring material throughout the yacht.
Each guest cabin spans an impressive 25 square meters and offers similar levels of comfort and luxury. This ensures that there is no competition among guests for the “big cabin”. Every cabin boasts a unique character, featuring an individualized headboard and a range of precious woods and fine Italian leathers. Attention to detail is evident in the double-stitched leather detailing and ventilation louvres designed to resemble the grille of a bonnet.
Excellence can comfortably accommodate a crew of 20 across 12 cabins, ensuring that guests receive the highest level of service during their stay on board.
Performance & Capabilities
Powering Excellence is a set of twin MTU 16V 4000 M73L engines, each outputting a remarkable 2,880 kW. This engine configuration allows Excellence to reach a maximum speed of 17 knots and cruise comfortably at 14 knots. This speed range, paired with a substantial fuel capacity, ensures that the yacht can cover considerable distances with ease.
The yacht's performance is further enhanced by its efficient hull design. The distinctive reverse bow, coined as the 'eagle bow' for its resemblance to an American eagle's beak, is not just an aesthetic marvel but also an exemplar of proficient naval architecture. This bow design, paired with the yacht's bulbous bow, aids in wave-breaking and increases buoyancy forward, resulting in a boat that handles at least as well as a traditional hull shape.
The yacht also features a 250 kW electric Schottel tunnel bow thruster and a 200 kW Schottel Jet stern thruster, offering excellent maneuverability. Additionally, the yacht is equipped with Quantum Marine stabilizers, ensuring that Excellence maintains optimum stability, regardless of the sea conditions.
Generators on board include three MTU 12V 2000 and one Caterpillar C7.1 units, providing reliable power for all onboard systems and amenities. The yacht's technical prowess extends to its tenders as well, which include a 9.5m Hodgdon Limo Tender and an 8m Hodgdon Open Tender.
Amenities
The yacht features a well-equipped gym, allowing her guests to keep up their fitness regimes at sea. For the ultimate relaxation experience, the yacht plays host to a luxury spa and sauna. Waterfront living can be enjoyed to the fullest, thanks to a large beach club and connecting swim platform with plenty of space for sitting back and admiring the sea views. In addition, a sumptuous cinema suite allows for movie nights at sea. The yacht can house plenty of nautical toys and accessories, with a well-appointed tender garage for storing her impressive locker. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort, while underwater lights create a dazzling light display when the sun goes down and an elevator makes the yacht fully-accessible.
