Damen Yachting has announced that it has been commissioned to build a fully custom 72m (236ft) hybrid explorer yacht.
Set for delivery in early 2024, this new expedition yacht will feature hybrid propulsion for zero-emission cruising to the most far-flung corners of the globe.
She has been commissioned by an owner with an exceptional interest in exterior and interior yacht design, and they will work with Michael Leach Design on both interior and exterior styling. Damen Yachting’s in-house team are responsible for the one-off custom naval architecture.
Damen Yachting’s Managing Director, Rose Damen, is looking forward to seeing the new project develop, saying: “This hybrid expedition vessel is an absolutely unique project. For us it has been very exciting to bring the Owner’s very unique vision to reality. We are dedicated to developing more efficient propulsion and power management solutions for our clients, which are underpinned by an environmentally sensitive mind-set. We are proud to be at the forefront of a new breed of luxury expedition vessels and this highly innovative new project embodies this approach.’’
The yacht will be powered by two main engines and a PTO/PTI hybrid electrical drive suitable for running up to 8 knots. This will be backed up by on-board battery power, and stored power that can be increased with containerised battery packs to allow extended zero-emission silent cruising in fragile marine systems. Also with the environment in mind all outdoor spaces will be finished in synthetic teak as a more sustainable, durable and low maintenance alternative.
This custom built yacht has versatile outdoor spaces that will be available to be used for sun and shade, tender and toy storage and a deck swimming pool. A powerful deck crane will be capable of lifting equipment up to 14 tonnes, including the yacht’s 13m (42.6ft) fast RIB and 9m (29.5ft) utility craft.
There will be generous areas for guest entertainment, as well as a dedicated Owner’s deck, VIP cabin and a touch and go helipad.
The project, which will accommodate 12 guests, will be built entirely at Damen’s Vlissingen facility in the Netherlands.
Damen Yachting currently has five projects in build, all above 55m (180ft). This includes two hulls of its popular SeaXplorer range - purpose built, long range explorer yachts.
The Dutch shipyard has a pedigree for building large vessels, the 21 yachts it has delivered since 2009 have an average length of 56.8m. The largest being its 77m expedition yacht 'La Datcha', which was delivered last year and looks set to be a popular charter yacht in 2021.
