Latest phase complete in restoration of 90-year-old superyacht MARALA

The 59m (193.5ft) superyacht MARALA is undergoing an extensive 18-month restoration that is expected to be completed in November.

British shipyard Pendennis has given an update on its restoration of the classic 1931 motor yacht MARALA.

The 59m (193.5ft) Camper and Nicholsons yacht arrived at the Pendennis facility in Falmouth in 2019 to begin the painstaking process of undergoing a comprehensive program of works to modernize her onboard systems and technology whilst retaining her original character.

The yard has revealed that its in-house team of specialists fabricators has now fully restored MARALA’s structure, managing to “preserve a significant amount of her original riveted vessel construction”.

MARALA has now been handed to Pendennis’ dedicated paint team who have the task of completing around 1,110 square meters (11,945 sq.ft) of paintwork to the exterior of the yacht.

As might be expected the classic yacht has a rich history, but surprisingly few Owners, only three in her 90-year-history, as a result her character, basic layout and original engines have all been preserved.

However she has had a number of structural modifications over the years, most notably in World War II when she was converted for naval service. When she came onto the market in 2016, it was for the first time in over 50 years, and her new owner set about having her meticulously restored.

Other aspects of the restoration include an upgrade of the power train, renewing the steelwork of the hull and a new interior courtesy of London-based design house Muza Lab that will ‘respect and celebrate the 1930s spirit of the vessel’.

The project is scheduled for completion in November 2021.

This isn’t the first time Pendennis’ refit team has been called upon to restore a classic superyacht. In 2017 it completed the restoration of the 1937 built yacht Malahne. In addition Haida 1929, built in 1929, Shamrock V, built-in 1930 and Fair Lady, built-in 1928, have all also undergone refits and restorations at the yard.
