Aviva, a multi-award-winning motor yacht measuring 98.4m (323ft), was delivered by the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen in 2017. The expertise of Reymond Langton Design is evident in both her interior design and exterior styling, while Abeking & Rasmussen contributed to her naval architecture.

Aviva is the third yacht of this name delivered to British businessman Joe Lewis, a major shareholder in Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Upon her launch, she promptly secured a position among the top 40 largest yachts, determined by her volume.

Key Features

  • Specially designed around a padel tennis court requirement
  • Sophisticated beach club
  • Guest cabin sizes are comparable to that of owner's cabins on a 50m yacht
  • Guest lift servicing all decks
  • Unique bow shape that cuts through the water

Design & Construction

Built with a displacement steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, Aviva boasts a 17.24m (56.6ft) beam and a 3.8m (12.5ft) draft. Spanning three decks, the yacht encompasses an internal volume of 4,999 gross tonnes (GT). The design process was accelerated to just six months and the exterior design in just one month. The yacht was built in just three years, a remarkable achievement.

Designed and constructed under Lloyds Register technical standards, Aviva embarked on sea trials after its launch in January 2017 and was delivered to her owners in May 2017.

Exterior Design

A notable aspect of Aviva's design involves pulling in the bridge deck superstructure, creating side decks for improved crew circulation, and refining the yacht's silhouette. This design choice underscores the shipyard's commitment to balancing functionality with form, ensuring the substantial beam enhances rather than overwhelms the refined lines.

Aviva's sleek appearance is further emphasized by the use of facets and long lines to visually "break up the mass." The sheer line, gracefully sweeping upward at the bow, contributes to the yacht's dynamic stance. The near-vertical bow enhances nautical capabilities, ensuring robust performance even in challenging sea conditions.

Abeking & Rasmussen's styling is evident in the elimination of classic size references, disguising the scale. For instance, rub rails are omitted, stanchions are replaced with glass, and crew quarters windows are grouped to create long lines of glazing. The anchor pocket is elongated and discreetly integrated into the hull, preserving the yacht's smooth profile.

Aviva's silver superstructure features select upright elements in a darker shade, designed to visually recede and enhance the perception of a more raked profile. This interplay of colors and shapes reflects the design team's approach to yacht exterior aesthetics.

The yacht's padel tennis court, measuring an impressive 20m by 10m (65.6ft by 32.8ft) with a ceiling height of 6.5m (21.3ft), is ingeniously integrated into the structure without compromising the sleek profile.  This triumph is hidden from view, yet its existence does not compromise the yacht's external beauty, a testament to the ingenuity of her designers.

Safety and structural integrity are prioritized in Aviva's design, featuring extra watertight doors and an armored wheelhouse capable of being sealed off for protection. The fortified forward VIP cabins and the wheelhouse are designed to withstand extreme conditions, ensuring the yacht's resilience and the safety of those on board.

M/Y Aviva combines sleek design with a near-vertical bow for robust performance and a refined look.

Interior Design

Upon stepping onboard Aviva, one encounters an atmosphere that departs from the typical seafaring experience. The main saloon provides a sophisticated entry, featuring a sunken seating area inviting guests to explore the owner's art collection. Just beyond lies a discreet cinema, adding an element of intrigue and exclusivity.

Moving to the upper saloon, the ambiance transforms into a functional family room, complete with extra comfortable sofas, a games table, and a sculptural Bogányi piano. The room is bathed in light, thanks to 9m of full-height windows that create an airy openness. Balconies and leather-clad doors enhance privacy and warmth.

The spacious interiors feature high ceilings, particularly noteworthy in the upper saloon with its lofty 2.6m headroom. The challenge of creating such a pillar-free grand space was met with clever structural solutions, ensuring stability and integrity without sacrificing aesthetics.

The interior styling follows a mandate of uniqueness, where every aspect embraces curves or organic forms, aspiring to be revolutionary. This philosophy extends to the furniture and fittings, wall treatments, and overheads. Abeking & Rasmussen's outfitter Rodiek rose to the challenge, crafting bespoke furniture and undulating wall panels with high-density CNC-milled foam—a technique once exclusive to the automotive industry, now repurposed for Aviva's avant-garde interior.

A neutral color palette is complemented by a variety of precious materials, including onyx, marble, shagreen, and supple leather. Artisanal touches abound, from resin and acrylic panels by Alex Turco to gold-mottled velvet by Sabina Fay Braxton adorning the guest beds. Even the staircases are sculptural triumphs, with one featuring floating treads reminiscent of turbine blades.

The interior's diverse textures and finishes seamlessly blend with the deck spaces, creating a unified design narrative. Elements such as organic patterns in the Esthec decking smoothly transition into the interior carpets, while the bar's design links the main saloon with the aft deck, fostering a harmonious indoor-outdoor experience.

Accommodation

Aviva comfortably accommodates 16 guests in eight gorgeous cabins, each boasting a size comparable to owner's suites found on a 50-meter yacht.

The owner suite is a remarkable space, located on the main deck for optimal stability and comfort, and spans a full beam. The suite encompasses a bedroom, an expansive bathroom complete with a monolithic Corian bathtub, and a wardrobe and dressing room of extraordinary scale, reminiscent of the world's most luxurious fashion boutiques.

Crew accommodation on Aviva is equally well-considered, providing those who work onboard with comfort and privacy. The quarters are designed to accommodate 35 crew aboard to provide a full guest service.

The separation of guest and crew areas has been ingeniously incorporated into Aviva's design, allowing for service without intrusion.

Performance & Capabilities

Aviva is powered by two robust MTU 16V4000 M73L engines, each producing 2,880kW of power. This impressive engine specification enabled Aviva to achieve a top speed of 20.3 knots during sea trials, notable for a yacht of her substantial size and volume. The yacht's optimized hull design and efficient powertrain allow her to cruise comfortably and economically at 16.5 knots, despite an official cruising speed of 14 knots. These specifications are indicative of Aviva's ability to balance power with grace, ensuring expedient travels without compromising on stability or comfort.

Aviva's range is equally impressive, offering extensive cruising capabilities for traversing vast distances with ease.

One of the key naval architectural goals for Aviva was achieving exceptional stability. The yacht features a unique hull design with a waist that bulges out below the waterline, significantly reducing and softening the roll motion experienced on board. This design choice not only enhances passenger comfort but also improves the yacht's overall performance and efficiency.

To further ensure a stable and comfortable ride, Aviva is outfitted with advanced stabilization technology, with MAGLift stabilizers located aft and a pair of fin stabilizers forward. This combination of stabilizers actively works to minimize the yacht's motion, both at anchor and while cruising, providing guests with an unrivaled sense of tranquility.

Aviva is equipped with supplementary electric motors that allow for smooth maneuvering and the capability to run silently at 11 knots during nighttime passages.

Leisure & Entertainment

The padel court takes center stage as the primary fitness focus onboard Aviva. A sport blending elements of tennis and squash, padel is played in pairs on a court strategically positioned at the bottom and center of the yacht. The placement of the court posed a unique architectural and engineering challenge, demanding ultra-strong crossbeams and a doubled bottom to handle the strain. Unlike a typical superstructure with inherent structural strength, the court's location required a thoughtful approach to ensure the transfer of loads and resistance to torsional bending. Situated just 600mm above the keel in a watertight zone, the court's structure, coupled with the watertight doors, adds stiffness to the surrounding framework.

“We’re running along at 19 knots, white horses everywhere, and they’re downstairs playing padel having no idea that there’s any sea at all”
Silverton

Special Features

Aviva's hull is the result of extensive new research and testing that ensures superior seakeeping abilities combined with a 20% decrease in drag. Less engine output is required, fuel consumption is dramatically reduced and the maximum speed is a full 20 knots. A particularly special feature is the hybrid drive system, allowing Aviva to run at up to 11 knots without the use of the main engines.
