Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 67'2" beam and a 19'6" draft. The yacht is built over 6 decks with an internal volume of 5,655 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.
Construction started in mid 2007. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in October 2009 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in March 2010.
Exterior Design
Crafted with a robust yet refined aesthetic, the exterior design of the superyacht Luna is a reflection of her explorer nature, balanced with an undeniable touch of elegance. The vision of German designer Frank Neubelt of the Newcruise studio, Luna's exterior lines evoke a "boy cool" look that is simultaneously tough and graceful—a fusion that perfectly encapsulates the yacht's spirit of adventure and luxury.
The iconic aft deck, a hallmark of Luna's design, is an ode to open-air living, having been meticulously conceived to enhance the outdoor experience of her guests. With its long, low profile, the deck originally captivated attention for its prioritization of exterior space, offering an expansive area dedicated to sun worship and relaxation.
In the realm of innovation, Luna features several fold-out balconies that serve as a testament to the yacht's commitment to bringing the outside in. These transformative spaces allow guests to enjoy the serenity of the ocean's expanse with a sense of privacy and exclusivity.
As an explorer yacht, Luna is equipped with not one but two helipads on the upper deck, ensuring seamless access for arrivals and departures, adding an element of convenience and sophistication to the yachting experience.
The refit that Luna underwent not only refreshed her look but also enhanced her outdoor facilities. The addition of extendable windbreaks on the rear of the bridge deck has elevated the main outdoor dining space, providing comfort and versatility in various weather conditions. The meticulous re-caulking of the teak across the vessel, along with the installation of Future Teak from Bolidt on the helidecks, showcases Luna's commitment to maintaining a pristine and enduring exterior.
The transformation of Luna's exterior is not just about aesthetics; it's about enhancing the functionality and experience of the yacht. The addition of a new raised section on the aft deck, introduced during the refit, creates a distinct area that serves as an idyllic spot for afternoon tea and relaxation. The thoughtful design changes, both big and small, have culminated in a yacht that not only meets the demands of the high seas but does so with unparalleled style and comfort.
Luna's exterior, now finished in a mesmerizing Luna Blue, presents a mirror-like finish that is the result of dedicated craftsmanship and attention to detail. The extensive paintwork, which involved a meticulous process of filling, fairing, and layering of coatings, represents the pinnacle of marine finishing, leaving the vessel with a flawless sheen that captures the essence of luxury at sea.
Interior Design
The interior of Luna, as conceived and brought to life by the acclaimed designer Donald Starkey, exudes a sense of serene elegance, a sanctuary of calm that stands in contrast to the more traditional, high-gloss yacht interiors often encountered on the high seas. Starkey's philosophy for Luna's interior was to create an ambiance that married luxury and tranquility, utilizing natural materials and soft finishes to achieve a soothing atmosphere that invites relaxation and contemplation.
Guided by the principle of understated sophistication, the interior is anchored by the use of oak panels, carefully sourced in Germany from substantial logs capable of being cut into expansive 70cm veneers. These panels have been wire-brushed to reveal the deeper grain and stained to a pale hue, lending the spaces a tactile and organic appeal that is both visually striking and eminently touchable.
The oak's inherent warmth is carried throughout Luna's internal spaces, from the inviting guest corridor on the main deck with its distinctive arched separations, which cleverly disguise watertight bulkhead divisions while adding a sculptural element, to the plush cabins where guests are swathed in luxury. The continuity of the oak flooring, "aged" to replicate the character of antique 17th-century beams, provides a grounding element that unifies the diverse spaces aboard the vessel.
Starkey's influence is evident in the considered modifications made to the yacht's layout, including the addition of a dining room that was not part of the original GA. By separating the dining area from the upper deck lounge using a dual-sided fireplace, he not only introduced a functional division but also created a visual and tactile focal point that can be enjoyed from both spaces.
During Luna's extensive refit, care was taken to preserve the essence of Starkey's original design while incorporating updates that would further enhance the guest experience. Soft furnishings were refreshed with new fabrics that complement the existing palette, and updates to all cabins ensure that the standard of luxury for which Luna is known is meticulously maintained.
Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of Luna's interior design is the way in which it caters to the practical needs of guests without sacrificing style. The novel inclusion of drawers in the new beach club sofa for shoe storage exemplifies this approach, allowing guests to transition seamlessly from the outdoor deck to the indoor sanctuary, fostering a sense of ease and comfort.
Accommodation
Designed to host an exclusive circle of 18 guests, Luna's accommodations are both lavish and intimate. The yacht boasts a generous nine suites, each crafted with meticulous attention to detail and equipped with the latest in comfort and technology. The interiors, a testament to timeless elegance, offer a serene retreat after a day of adventure or leisure.
The pinnacle of Luna's accommodations is the owner's suite, a sanctuary that offers unparalleled privacy and grandeur. With expansive views and direct access to a private terrace, the suite is an embodiment of luxury. The roof opens over the master bed for incredible views, or for sleeping under the stars at night. The owner's quarters are designed not just for rest, but also for inspiration – a space where the beauty of the sea meets the pinnacle of onboard living.
The guest cabins, accessible through a dedicated corridor on the main deck, strike the perfect balance between accessibility and seclusion. Each cabin is a testament to the yacht's commitment to excellence, with updates from the refit including new fabrics and amenities that elevate the onboard experience. The cabins are designed to be a personal oasis, providing guests with a space that is both comfortable and refined.
For the crew, who are integral to the seamless operation and exceptional service on Luna, the lower deck is dedicated to their well-being. Accommodations for a crew of 49 have been thoughtfully upgraded with new upholstery, curtains, and AV/IT systems, ensuring that they have a comfortable and functional space to recharge.
Performance & Capabilities
Performance and Mechanical Capabilities of Superyacht Luna:
Luna's powerhouse is a diesel-electric propulsion system orchestrated by seven robust generators delivering a combined strength of 15,000 horsepower. These generators are not only the lifeblood of Luna's voyage across the seas but are also capable of supplying electricity to a small town, underscoring the magnitude of her energy capabilities.
The precision-engineered electric motors, coupled to each propeller shaft, are the silent force propelling Luna through the waters at impressive speeds. She can cut through the waves at a full speed of 22 knots, and even at such velocity, one generator can remain offline, highlighting the efficiency and redundancy built into her systems. This formidable speed is complemented by the yacht's ability to navigate through shallow ice, thanks to her incredible power reserves.
During her meticulous refit, Luna's mechanical systems underwent extensive maintenance. The propulsion shafts were carefully extracted for thorough surveying, and critical components like seals and bearings were replaced to ensure seamless performance.
Stability, a crucial aspect of any vessel’s performance, is deftly managed aboard Luna. She has been fitted with stabilization systems, allowing Luna to provide a smooth and comfortable journey across the most challenging of seas.
With her 850,000-litre fuel tanks providing a maximum range of 7,600 nautical miles at 16 knots, Luna is built to offer extended autonomy at sea, allowing her to embark on long-range expeditions in remote corners of the world without the constant need for refueling stops.
Amenities
A gym with all the latest equipment allows her guests to keep their workout routines while at sea. Rest and relaxation can be achieved on board, thanks to a luxury spa. Adjoining the water, a beach club lets those on board enjoy the feeling of being close to the sea while luxury yacht Luna plays host to a complete dancefloor. The yacht features a tender garage with storage for a range of toys and accessories. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort, while underwater lights create a dazzling light display when the sun goes down and an elevator makes the yacht fully-accessible.
