Future World’s Largest Yacht 195m REV OCEAN by Vard Embarks on Sea Trials

The superyacht REV OCEAN, an extraordinary vessel designed for scientific exploration, has taken a significant step towards completion with her first sea trials since her 13-metre extension in late 2023.

Measuring 194.9 meters in length and boasting a gross tonnage of 19,045 GT, this vessel is set to become the world’s biggest yacht by both length and gross tonnage upon delivery. Constructed by VARD in Norway and with design elements overseen by renowned yacht designer Espen Øino, REV OCEAN is a vessel of unparalleled ambition.

A Milestone: REV OCEAN Sea Trials

Departing on 27 January 2025, the sea trials of REV OCEAN mark a pivotal moment in its development. Departing from SØVIK, Norway, the vessel is undergoing rigorous testing to evaluate its propulsion, navigation, and safety systems.

These trials, expected to conclude on 1 February 2025, represent a key phase in ensuring the yacht’s readiness for its dual-purpose mandate. Sea trials provide an opportunity to fine-tune onboard systems and ensure that the vessel can handle the demands of both research expeditions and luxury charters.

REV OCEAN is powered by an energy-efficient diesel-electric propulsion system, capable of a top speed of 17 knots. This advanced setup aligns with the yacht's environmentally conscious mission, reducing her carbon footprint while maintaining high performance. Once fully operational, the vessel will have a range of 21,000 nautical miles, enabling long-term global expeditions.

In addition to her technical performance, REV Ocean's interiors and living spaces have also been put to the test during the trials. Although primarily designed for scientific research, the vessel offers luxury accommodations for up to 36 guests in 18 staterooms, alongside quarters for 54 crew and researchers.

A Record-Breaking Vessel

Upon its delivery, REV OCEAN will redefine the top ranks of the world’s biggest yachts. Currently, the 15,917GT superyacht DILBAR claims the top spot on YachtBuyer's YB100, which ranks the largest yachts by gross tonnage. With its 19,045 GT, REV OCEAN will enter the list, replacing DILBAR as number one.

Gross tonnage is a more comprehensive measurement than length, as it reflects the yacht’s overall internal volume, including living spaces, storage, and operational areas. This metric provides a clearer picture of the vessel’s functionality and capacity, making it a more practical measure for determining the largest yachts.

At 195 meters, REV OCEAN will also claim the top spot in the Top100, surpassing superyacht AZZAM, which measures 180.65 meters. AZZAM has held the title of the world's longest yacht since her delivery in 2013, but she will now move to second place as REV OCEAN takes the first position.

A New Era in Yachting

What truly sets REV OCEAN apart is her dual mission of luxury and purpose. While most superyachts are designed solely for leisure, this vessel aims to contribute to marine research and conservation. The motor yacht is equipped with advanced laboratories, cutting-edge sensors, and even a Triton submersible capable of diving to depths of 2,300 meters. These features make it a floating research station designed to address critical issues such as ocean acidification, overfishing, and plastic pollution.

The yacht will operate in three modes: as a platform for scientific research, as a charter yacht to generate funding for its initiatives, and as an educational platform to raise awareness about ocean health. This model ensures that REV OCEAN remains financially sustainable while maximizing her positive impact on the global scientific community.
