Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement ice class steel hull and superstructure she features a 68'11" beam and a 18'11" draft. The yacht is built over 8 decks with an internal volume of 9,932 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.

Construction started in early 2001. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in January 2003 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in December 2003.

Exterior Design

The exterior design of the yacht Octopus is both functional and imposing. Her navy-blue hull and towering decks create a strong visual presence. The yacht features a robust explorer profile so she is capable of navigating through diverse environments.

Octopus is equipped with two helipads: the aft helideck can be used for commercial purposes, and the foredeck helipad is designated for touch-and-go operations. These helipads are complemented by a helicopter hangar that provides climate-controlled storage for aircraft, including a Sikorsky 76 and/or a Eurocopter EC145.

One of the distinctive features is the 36m (118ft) internal wet dock. This area houses the main tenders, which are launched through a sizable transom door. The dock also contains a variety of other tenders and watercraft, such as a custom Vikal limousine tender and several Zodiac boats, each stored in dedicated garages.

The yacht's hull design includes a tapered, rounded keel that transitions to a fine entry at the bow, optimizing stability and performance. The aft deck is expansive and functional, accommodating various activities and equipment. For entertainment, the yacht includes an outdoor area with a heated freshwater swimming pool featuring a retractable glass floor, converting the space into an entertainment area as needed.

Whether you're residing in the owner's suite or any of the VIP staterooms, Octopus promises an accommodation experience that is nothing short of extraordinary.

Interior Design

The interior design of Octopus emphasizes functionality and comfort while incorporating high-quality materials and a range of amenities. The interior spaces are designed with neutral colors and extensive use of bee's wing-figured eucalyptus wood paneling, which provides a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Several lounges and salons are available for guests. Forward of the central staircase is a gentleman's library and lounge featuring a fireplace and a chess table. This area opens to the 'Musashi' wine bar and an impressive observation lounge/dining area with two circular tables, each accommodating six guests, and offering panoramic views forward.

The entertainment deck includes a 15-seat cinema equipped with a Sony PlayStation 5 and a Microsoft Xbox One. This deck also houses a well-equipped gym featuring a Technogym treadmill, bike, Skillrow rowing machine, Kinesis fitness wall, and a Cybex leg press machine. Additionally, the deck offers a smoothie bar, a table-tennis table, hair and massage salons, and a grand library with an ethanol fireplace.

A modern bar/lounge has replaced the former recording studio. The new bar area features guitars hanging from the original wall mounts and a grand piano. The space has been updated with bleached oak flooring that matches the weathered teak deck outside. The vocal booth now functions as a DJ booth, maintaining the soundproofing for optimal entertainment purposes. The area is equipped with a new sound system and outdoor lighting.

The wine bar, situated in the former formal dining room, features a backlit ceiling with scenes from Paul Allen's 2015 shipwreck dive to the WWII battleship Musashi. Adjacent to this area is the guest observation lounge, which features two large sofas that provide excellent views over the bow.

Performance & Capabilities

Octopus is equipped with eight MTU 16V 4000 M50 diesel engines, each delivering 1840 kW. This engine setup provides the yacht with a reliable and powerful performance, suitable for long voyages and challenging marine conditions.

Octopus can reach a top speed of 19 knots and cruises comfortably at 12.5 knots. These speeds are achieved efficiently, with a fuel consumption rate of 1000 litres per hour. Octopus boasts an impressive range, capable of covering 12,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12.5 knots and 7,100 nautical miles at 19 knots.

Octopus is fitted with advanced stabilizers to enhance onboard comfort by reducing roll. This feature is particularly beneficial during rough sea conditions, ensuring a smoother and more stable experience for guests and crew.

Equipped with a Dynamic Positioning System, Octopus can automatically maintain its position using its propellers and thrusters. This system is highly beneficial during operations such as tender launches, diving expeditions, or when docking in challenging environments.

The yacht includes an array of auxiliary vessels, such as the 18.10m Delta 54' tender powered by twin Volvo Penta inboard engines with IPS propulsion, and the 9.34m custom Vikal International Limousine Tender with 2x260hp engines. Additionally, there are various Zodiac tenders equipped with both inboard and outboard engines, supporting a wide range of water activities and expeditions.

Tenders

The Octopus stands out with its unique floodable garage. This ingenious feature allows the yacht to carry an array of toys and tenders, including a helicopter, a submarine, and a floatplane, all in a concealed manner. The floodable garage, situated on the yacht's centerline, forms one very long and tall compartment that can be filled with water to launch or retrieve the stored vessels.
