The Yacht Safety and Environmental Consortium (YSEC) brings together five major classification societies: Lloyd’s Register (LR), RINA, DNV, Bureau Veritas (BV), and ABS, all collaborating to improve practices for new yachts over 24 meters.
The YSEC aims to address the unique challenges in yacht design, operation, and sustainability. Unlike other vessels that fall under the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), yachts have lacked dedicated oversight. YSEC fills this gap by offering guidance on best practices and fostering a unified approach to safety and environmental regulations.
Lloyd’s Register is proud to join our peers in forming YSEC. By working together, we can tackle industry-wide challenges more effectively and set new benchmarks for yacht safety and sustainability.”

Fiorenzo Spadoni, North Europe Marine Senior Director at RINA, highlighted the importance of cooperation: “The YSEC is a pivotal milestone for the superyacht industry. Safety at sea and environmental protection are non-negotiable priorities, and through collaboration, we can ensure that these areas are aligned across the sector.”
Martin Richter, Ship Type Expert Yachts at DNV Maritime, echoed the sentiment: “A unified approach is crucial to setting clear and consistent standards. YSEC allows us to pool our expertise and promote the highest safety and environmental standards across the yachting industry.”
The consortium has already begun working on initiatives including environmental indices, tonnage calculations, and load line assignments. Leadership roles within YSEC will rotate every two years, ensuring fresh perspectives from each of its member organizations.
The formation of YSEC at the Monaco Yacht Show highlights the growing emphasis on sustainability and safety within the superyacht sector, ensuring that yachts for sale in this evolving market meet the highest standards.
