Royal Huisman’s record-breaking 58.5m (192ft) superyacht PHI has been captured on camera in the Netherlands as she prepares to start her sea trials.
The menacing hull, which takes its inspiration from the hood of a cobra, has been specially developed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects. The Fast Displacement XL hull form allows the yacht to be long and sleek, making PHI “by far” the longest motor yacht in the sub 500GT category.
She was launched in July at Royal Huisman’s Vollenhove facility and is expected to be delivered before the end of this year along with her 36m (118ft) support ship PHI Phantom.
The story behind PHI’s build is as interesting as her snake-influenced design. The project came about following many in-depth conversations with her Owner, and the exterior design and interior layout are based on the Golden Ratio, a unique mathematical formula known as Phi.
It is this formula that governs the continuation of dimensions and shapes throughout the design and sees three themes running throughout the yacht: the galaxy, the ocean surface and the underwater world.
The responsibility for translating this formula into reality fell to Cor D. Rover who designed PHI’s exteriors and London-based studio Lawson Robb who penned the still unseen interiors.
Whilst details are scarce, we do know PHI will accommodate 12 guests across six cabins and features a 7m (23ft) swimming pool to aft that can be filled with seawater or freshwater. The pool’s floor is also maneuverable, to create extra deck space when needed.
PHI’s support ship, Phi Phantom is being built by Turkish builder Alia Yachts and the 36m (118ft) superyacht has been described as a “mini PHI”. She will support the mothership by carrying tenders and toys as PHI as no garage to stow.
Both PHI and Phi Phantom are expected to be delivered later this year.
Dutch builder Royal Huisman is well known for building sailing yachts, such as 90m (295ft) ATHENA and 81m (266ft) ‘Sea Eagle’, and PHI will become the largest motor yacht the yard has built upon her launch. The yard also has some more sizeable projects in the pipeline, at the end of 2020 it announced it is building the world’s largest true sportfisher yacht, 52m (170.6ft) Project 406.
