YachtBuyer is the only place where you can directly compare competing yacht models, with full breakdowns on technical specifications and onboard features. So with YachtBuyer you can not only enjoy the best data and market activity on your chosen yachts but also how they compare to their closest rivals.

The Hatteras GT59 is a red-blooded sportsfisher designed for serious, high-speed offshore work. The tough deep Vee hull. and shaft-drive engines combine to create a top speed of 40 knots or more. But alongside this powerful platform, the GT59 can also be a comfortable cruiser offering various interior layouts and the option of four to seven berths. So whether you are looking for family fishing fun or big-game the Hatteras will serve you well. The Viking 58C offers you a very close comparison to the Hatteras, with the same meaty performance, cabin and berth options and that classic, raked US sportsfisher style. The Viking is the slightly longer yacht, but its narrower beam means the level of onboard space will be similar.

Performance

Be in no doubt, these are two powerful performers able to carry their 40-knot top speeds through some serious seas. Both yachts have deep Vee hull designs running on shaft-drive engines. There are multiple horsepower options, but, with the standard set-up delivering around 40 knots, you may not need to go for more. The Hatteras has an all Caterpillar engine line-up, while the Viking offers MAN or the German MTU. For long-distance or economic cruising, the Hatteras has 6624lt (1750gl) fuel tanks and a range of around 545nm at 11knots. The Viking has smaller 5686lt (1250gl) tanks but enjoys the better range, with 595nm at the same 11knots. This may be due to the Hatteras’ heavier 40-tonne (88,185) displacement, compared to the Viking’s 36tonnes (79,366lb). The Viking also offers optional 6590lt tanks adding an extra 90nm to the range.

Interior

Both yachts deliver a classically nautical flavour inside rich with cabinetry. As is usual with this style of yacht, there is no lower helm so space is dedicated to living within a charm-laden salon where the galleys play a central role. There are numerous options on finish, cabinetry and seating on the Hatteras and Viking. The Hatteras salon enjoys a timber sole and feels open with an optional dinette arrangement to starboard. There are also some fun lighting options including a back-lit worktop. The Viking has facing seating as standard and deep windows for guests.

Accommodation

The main Owner’s cabin is found amidships on both yachts, with a double berth, ensuite facilities and lots of cabinetry and stowage. The Viking has its berth athwartships, across the beam, while the Hatteras has a more conventional forward-facing berth.

Helm Station

With no lower helm, the flybridge offers the sole steering position. Designed for optimum visibility, particularly over the stern, the role of the helm is to assist those fishing and manoeuvre the yachts when a bite is on or a shoal is found. The helm stations are near-identical with central consoles, space for triple screens and overhead consoles for ancillary equipment. Single or twin helm seats can be fitted with the adjustable wheel set on a teak plinth. A secondary helm can be added to the optional tuna tower on both yachts, with repeater throttle and steering controls.

Deck Areas

A reflection of these boats’ working routes, the foredeck is left open and clean, accessed via narrow side decks and only used for taking a line or fixing a fender. For both yachts, the main guest and working area is the aft cockpit. The layouts are identical, with low bulwarks and an open deck that can be fitted with a fixed fighting chair. Specialist stowage is found on and below decks, including rod holders, bate wells and seawater or cold stores for the catch. For those not fishing, raised, aft-facing benches sit safely under the flybridge overhang, the Hatteras coming with the option of an air-conditioned backrest.

Flybridge

There are seats, but these flybridges are far more about working than relaxing. Accessed by a vertical ladder, the two yachts offer a near-identical layout, with a central helm console with a deep seat forward and wraparound benches following the outline of the flybridge. Both flybridges are offered with a hardtop and raised tuna tower.

Compare Layouts

Reflecting the intended use as either family-friendly or serious game fishers, these yachts offer layouts to cater for four to seven people - the forward cabin switching from a traditional double to a harder-working three berth crew layout. The Hatteras also has the option of a shrine-like rod room to starboard, in place of a bunked cabin.
