Crew of Dutch cargo ship airlifted after ‘near capsize’

The 12 crew members were all rescued safely after the Dutch cargo ship the Eemslift Hendrika began to list dangerously in severe weather.

The dramatic rescue of the crew of a Dutch cargo ship that was in danger of capsizing has been caught on camera by the Norwegian Coast Guards.

The Eemslift Hendrika was heading to Norway when rough seas made cargo in the ship shift, causing it to heel enormously, followed by an engine failure. The Captain became concerned the boat may capsize completely and asked the Norwegian Coast Guard for help.

Footage released shows some of the 12 crew members jumping into the ocean as Norwegian authorities carried out a two-stage evacuation.

The first eight crew members were airlifted by helicopter from the deck of the cargo ship, the last four had to jump into the water and be airlifted from the sea as the waves began rocking the boat so severely.

The Hendrika is carrying around 350 tonnes of heavy oil and 50 tonnes of diesel in its tanks and is currently floating around 130km (80miles) off the coast in the North Sea.

The Norwegian Coast Administration has confirmed its intention to put someone on board and arrange for the cargo ship to be towed as soon as weather conditions allow.

The operator of the vessel has also called in the Dutch company Smit Salvage, which was involved in the refloating of the Ever Given in Egypt's Suez Canal last week
