When it comes to customisation, many shipyards talk the talk, but Sanlorenzo actually delivers. With the SL90A, you start with a blank sheet of paper, allowing you to customise the yacht to be something that is uniquely yours. This model stands out particularly because of its layout, which is among the most innovative within its size category. The real question is, for yachts under 30 metres (90 ft), does it get any better than the SL90A?
The SL90A on show at Boot Düsseldorf 2024 has an owner’s suite on the main deck, forward, with direct access to the terrace on the foredeck and three further guest cabins on the lower deck. There is space for four crew in a well-designed crew area, which has two cabins, two bathrooms and a mess, but you have to remember all of this arrangement is completely flexible.

Review Video
The SL90A's is the second asymmetric yacht design that has come about as a result of the collaboration between car designer Chris Bangle with the exterior styling of Bernardo Zuccon, and Sanlorenzo themselves - the first design being the SL102A in 2018. The asymmetrical configuration allows for a layout typically reserved for larger yachts, like the owner's cabin and main deck salon being on the same level, and the owner’s cabin having dedicated access to the bow area.
The asymmetry is well executed - you hardly notice it. The raised port side deck connects the foredeck to the expansive flybridge. This not only enhances the space but also improves the flow. This layout creates 10 to 15% more space in the saloon compared to rivals without such an arrangement. Sanlorenzo have also installed their "One Way" glazing on the side bulwarks which matches its white hull, so the people inside can look outside across the side deck or through a fashion plate (depending on which side they are on) without interrupting the sleek exterior lines. Again, this really hides any lopsidedness asymmetric boats normally would have.

Sanlorenzo has placed the owner's cabin in an isolated position away from the machinery, stabilisers, and generators - guaranteeing peacefulness. Also the doors are incredibly thick to help shut out any other sounds.
In the saloon, the integrated staircase which has to be there due to the absence of a side deck, is really artistically done. The lighting beautifully highlights the steps, and the connection to the glass adds a lovely effect.
Overall, the SL90A's design and build are not just about aesthetics but also about functionality and maximising space. The clever use of asymmetry, thoughtful integrations, and attention to detail make this yacht a standout in its class.
Saloon
Sanlorenzo has extended the saloon right out to the beam of the SL90A and this design creates a lovely window-side seating area with glorious views. There's a lounging area featuring Minotti furniture, and if glass coffee tables aren't your thing, you can personalise it to your heart's content. A decorative panel can neatly slide over to conceal the TV when not in use as well.

Owner's Cabin
The cabin is flooded with natural light, thanks to the large windows on either side. Opposite the bed is a TV that is integrated into a mirror - you’d barely know it’s there when turned off.
On the port side, there’s a nice bureau, next to another window and the use of wood throughout the cabin is really lovely, with hidden pop-out storage spaces.
Stepping down, the bathroom is finished with in marble, with twin sinks and a spacious shower, and nice lighting and skylights that give the space natural light.
A further step down leads to a dressing area featuring big double wardrobes and a wall of mirrors, so you can double check what you look like. For a yacht of this size, the owner’s cabin is a fabulous space.

Guest Accommodation
The VIP cabin is very nice with a spacious double bed that runs across the width of the boat. Storage is ample with cleverly integrated spaces on the opposite side and additional storage behind. The TV is mounted inside a mirror, same as the owner's cabin, which keeps it out of sight when not in use. The large, proper opening portholes give glorious natural ventilation, if you don't want to run the air conditioning, though of course, the entire interior is air-conditioned. The VIP cabin also has a private, very nice bathroom.
![Sanlorenzo-SL90A-VIP-cabin](https://image.yachtbuyer.com/w1440/h755/qh/ca/kc5543de8/cms/photo/2723516.jpg)
The twin cabin offers a bit of flexibility. Set up as two separate berths, they can easily be slid together to form a double bed. It’s a great feature, providing options depending on the guest setup. This cabin mirrors the setup of the VIP, with wide portholes for natural ventilation, storage, and the TV integrated into the mirror. Again, it has its own private bathroom, so no sharing necessary.
The final guest cabin, set up as a double, is not much smaller than the VIP. It still has a luxury feel as it's so spacious. The bathroom, slightly smaller, is still a very good size and private. The cabin includes its own AV system and climate control, making it a very comfortable space for guests to enjoy.

Crew Spaces
The galley is designed with the crew in mind with direct access to the crew quarters from here as well as a side door out onto the deck - very well-connected. The countertops are vast and equipped with fiddled edges to prevent kitchen stuff from slipping. There's also a big fridge freezer and a good cooking setup.
![Sanlorenzo-SL90A-galley](https://image.yachtbuyer.com/w1440/h755/qh/ca/ka1d8baf7/cms/photo/2723522.jpg)
The crew accommodation is underneath the owner's cabin on the SL90A. First impressions? It's nicely finished. The flooring is a bit more basic than the upper levels, but the woodwork still maintains a high-quality feel. Down here, there are two crew cabins: one with bunk beds and another similarly arranged. This layout allows for accommodating up to four crew members comfortably.
Two identical bathrooms are provided, one on each side. No queuing for the bathroom in the morning or evening for the crew Additionally, the crew space has a mess area complete with a fridge, and the table here opens up for dining or perhaps a game of cards. And with easy access to the galley just up a set of steps, it's a convenient setup for the crew.

There is an upper helm on the SL90A but it's the helm positioned in the pilot house where the skipper will likely spend the majority of their time. The helm is better protected and offers a commanding view, obviously better for any nighttime passages. The Raymarine screens are neatly lined up ahead, but a bit of a stretch away. To help with this, you can opt for a seat with controls integrated into the armrest, allowing you to manage everything like Dr Evil in his chair.
There's a proper upright steering wheel and ZF throttles with thrusters on either side and it's worth noting that while the helm on the flybridge is great, this pilot house arrangement offers more screens and greater oversight of the boat’s systems.

This particular model is propelled by 2,000hp MAN diesels, getting up to a top speed of 33 knots. It cruises comfortably at 8 to 10 knots, stabilised by fin stabilisers to keep the ride smooth. However, if you fancy getting a move on, it can also cruise at 25 knots without breaking a sweat.

The SL90A's tender garage is capable of accommodating a four-metre tender which operates on a trolley system. Lower the hydraulic platform, and the trolley rolls out to launch or retrieve the tender. Beyond housing the tender, this space is very practical by giving a large amount of additional storage.
The furniture setup in the cockpit allows for various configurations to suit your needs. On the yacht I toured, there were two split tables that can be adjusted up and down. But if you fancied one large table or a completely different arrangement across the transom, that’s entirely doable.
This space is also well-protected, making it a superb outdoor-living area. Boarding gates on either side ensure you don’t have to go down to the bathing platform to get off, especially useful if you're docked alongside a high quayside. The mooring gear is beautifully executed in polished stainless steel, adding to the overall polished feel of this area.

Side Deck & Foredeck
The SL90A has an easy, intuitive flow which is very apparent on the side deck. The attention to detail here is lovely, with twin boat hooks neatly mounted and ready for action, like for grabbing ground lines in the Mediterranean. The glazed "One Way" sections along the side deck align with the main deck master cabin to ensure light and views are not obscured by the raised bulwark. There are a couple of side doors to help crew movement. One leads directly into the galley and another down to the crew space, making it incredibly easy for the crew to move around the decks.
![Sanlorenzo-SL90A-side-deck-down](https://image.yachtbuyer.com/w466/h294/qh/ca/ow-1,d-1/kb43f5c52/cms/photo/2723601.jpg)

The foredeck is basically a private terrace for the owner. This area has access directly from the owner's cabin and features a bench seat and table - a perfect spot for a morning coffee while taking in the view over the bow - though it is connected to the rest of the yacht and accessible to other guests.
![Sanlorenzo-SL90A-foredeck-terrace](https://image.yachtbuyer.com/w1440/h755/qh/ca/k639e5ad2/cms/photo/2723600.jpg)
Flybridge
The flybridge is accessible up from the foredeck due to the asymmetric design. The spaciousness is immediately apparent as you make your way up the steps, leading to a vast sunbathing area in front of the pilot house. You could easily line up all your guests here to soak up the sun and enjoy the fabulous views. While the starboard side offers a clear pathway, it doesn't connect to the bow like the port side does.
Crewing from the flybridge may be a bit more difficult as there is a longer path to hang fenders, but the wires or optional railings here can assist. There's also a door leading straight from the deck to the helm station, which is flanked by double benches on both sides, and loose furniture aft for ultimate relaxation. Sanlorenzo offers bespoke options here, so you can customise the layout to suit your needs.
The overhead vane-style sunroof allows the panels to be tilted to control sunlight exposure and additionally, there's an internal staircase leading directly to the pilot house. The final access point from the cockpit brings you straight up to this deck, rounding off what is an incredibly well-designed and enjoyable flybridge.
![Sanlorenzo-SL90A-flybridge](https://image.yachtbuyer.com/w1440/h755/qh/ca/k0b7e0f80/cms/photo/2723603.jpg)
The best route to the engine room of the SL90A is through the door next to the cockpit stairs but there's also a hatch in the cockpit floor for quick inspections. Once inside, despite the climb down an awkward ladder, you'll find an impressive space. The control panels are neatly aligned on the aft end, and it's all very well-lit.
Going between the two enormous MAN V12 2,000hp diesel engines is easy and these engines are mounted on V drives, with the gearbox situated here and the shaft disappearing beneath. The engine room's symmetry is lovely, with twin 35 kW generators on each side and exhausts perfectly aligned. The cabling is particularly tidy and clipped out of the way - it's an immaculate engineering space.

Our Verdict
The SL90A's asymmetric layout cleverly maximises interior space - this asymmetry is brilliantly executed; you hardly notice it. The flybridge and foredeck connection is great, offering well-integrated spaces across its layout. The owner's cabin is peaceful and well-isolated from the machinery. The saloon design is lovely, with artistic touches and practical features like the pocket door and storage. The crew space is a bit basic and could be a bit more refined, but it's well-connected to the galley and the engine room is immaculate, but has an awkward entry. The boat gives a top speed of nearly 30 knots which is not bad for a yacht of 100 tonnes) but will cover nearly 1,000nm at displacement speed. The SL90A performs well at under 30 meters. It’s a stylish yacht that proves to be a solid addition to Sanlorenzo's range of asymmetric models.
Reasons to Buy
- Brilliant asymmetric design
- Main deck owner's cabin
- Vast flybridge
- Lots of potential for customisation
Things to Consider
- Awkward engine room access
- Basic crew space
- Styling is a little dated

Rivals to Consider
When picking the perfect yacht, it's all about personal choice. If power credentials are what you're after, the planing hull of the SL90A pushes along at speeds of up to 29 knots, rivalling the best in its class.
Now, if overnight accommodation is your primary focus, the SL90A, with its four-cabin layout for up to eight guests, does fall short compared to some of its rivals. The Ferretti Yachts InFYnito 90 and Princess Y95, for example, offer more guest accommodation, sleeping up to 10 guests across five cabins. These models are a better bet for those looking to maximise the number of family and friends they can host onboard. However, the SL90A stands out with a full-beam master cabin, en-suite bathroom, hull side windows, and a skylight. Similarly, the Sanlorenzo SL86 provides four cabins for eight guests, making it a strong contender in terms of comfort and style for family vacations.
In terms of performance, the SL90A holds its own with a respectable cruising speed of 25 knots and a maximum speed of 29 knots. However, the SL86 edges ahead slightly with a cruising speed of 27 knots, signalling a lean towards more dynamic performance capabilities. The Riva 90' Argo is also right up there, cruising at 26 knots.
Despite stiff competition, the Sanlorenzo SL90A stands out with its unique blend of performance, asymmetry, comfort, and style. Whether you’re eyeing the Sanlorenzo SL range or exploring its rivals, this yacht certainly proves its worth.
