Sanlorenzo SP92 Review (2024 Edition)

Making its debut at the 2024 Cannes Yachting Festival, the Sanlorenzo SP92 is a heady mix of style and performance with a top speed of nearly 40 knots.

The SP92 is the 'little' sister to the Sanlorenzo SP110 and though it may be a bit smaller, it still packs quite a punch. With a combined 4,000hp running through water jets, it will top out at 38 knots and cruise at 35 knots for over 400nm.

This range is characterised by its clean design and enormous aft deck, which is highly customisable in true Sanlorenzo style. It is also home to a tender garage, discreetly hidden beneath the teak. Below deck, there are two guest cabins — both ensuite — and a full beam owner's cabin that is just dripping with style. In this in-depth review, we're going to show you what else it has to offer.

Design & Build

With exterior design by Studio Zuccon International Project and interiors from Piero Lissoni, the SP92 is a faithfully scaled-down version of the gorgeous SP110, which was the first model to be launched in this range. The smooth, rounded surfaces are anathema to the sharp angles we're seeing more of these days and these boats stand out from the crowd because of it. The SP range looks like nothing else.

Underneath the bathing platform, you'll find twin jet drives. While the SP110 has triple jets, the SP92's twin jets still pack a punch, pushing it to 38 knots, thanks to 4,000hp from a pair of MAN 2000 V12 diesels. Very impressive for a vessel nearly 28m (90ft) long.

Although the 'SP' does not stand for 'solar panels' (it's Smart Performance), the 92 has plenty of them installed. They are ultra-high-efficiency monocrystalline solar panels, designed to top up the domestic batteries. These photovoltaic cells are positioned on the superstructure and generate an average of about 3kWp/h. This means all hotel functions remain operational while anchored without having to rely solely on the generator.

The SP92's design isn't just about performance & efficiency; it’s about creating an inviting space. Sanlorenzo aimed to cross a large motorboat with a beach, and this is the result. The copper-coloured blade along the superstructure is a signature of the SP range, while the curvature around the foredeck, complemented by stainless steel detailing, is very stylish. But it's practical as well, Sanolorezo prides itself on its engineering and practical approach to boatbuilding beneath the rakish skin of these boats.

Interior Accommodation

The interior is just as striking as the exterior with an architectural flourish that you wouldn't expect to find on a boat. Glass panels on either side, extending above your head, create an atrium effect, with a strip of glazing up top giving a very airy feel.

This space feels like an apartment, linking to the lower deck accommodation via a staircase. It’s flexible, with a mezzanine leading to the living area, lounging section, and dining space. If you prefer a dining room at the rear, you can have that, but on the show boat, it was a lounging area.

The TV pops up neatly from a hidden compartment, and a flat floor connects this area to the outdoor living space. The stylish doors, with their unique kink, complement the extraordinary ceiling heights, which elevate the sense of space here even further. It's quite breathtaking in its scale and ambition.

Floor to ceiling windows make for a very bright main deck

The floor-to-ceiling windows are made from special laminated glass which protects the interior from UV rays. A sliding door on this side gives access to the side decks and natural ventilation, so you don't need to rely on air-con unless it's very warm outside. Looking back over the seating area, with windows on either side and the stunning glass at the back opening onto the aft deck, the view is fabulous.

The seating area is perfect for a drink or coffee, and the dining space adapts to your needs. Sanlorenzo offers pretty extraordinary levels of customisation on its yachts and it's happy to indulge its customers' specific requests.

Guest accommodation on this yacht is versatile, offering a mix of relaxation and privacy. That said, you might expect to have at least four proper guest suites on a boat of this size.

Amidships, you'll find what they call the jolly cabin. It’s the perfect spot to unwind in complete comfort, whether you're enjoying the air conditioning or simply crashing out in the secluded privacy of the lower deck. You’ve got the option to close it off with partition doors, transforming this space into a proper cabin if you prefer. A small double bed can fit snugly in here, and it conveniently connects to the day head, which doubles as an ensuite in the four-cabin layout.

Moving on, the yacht boasts two identical guest doubles. The beds are a good size, and the rooms showcase beautiful curvature in the ceiling. Note the boat doesn't have hull windows but more traditional portholes, which open to allow for some natural ventilation in the cabins.

Each cabin includes a well-sized, private ensuite, complete with hanging storage tucked neatly behind the door. Both guest cabins also have independent AV, with a TV mounted on the bulkhead, and independent air-con controls.

Owner's Cabin

The forward owner's cabin aboard the SP92 feels like a retreat. The décor is tasteful, and the repeated deckhead design is lovely, creating a beautiful ambiance. The glazed wardrobes are a feature we've seen before on Sanlorenzo products but they make them a real feature and the fact they're a light source means they help brighten this space, even with the doors closed.

While there's no bureau, the sofa opposite the bed provides a comfortable spot for relaxing away from the bed. The TV is subtly integrated into the wall behind a mirror, maintaining the cabin's minimalist design. The bathroom is another highlight, with a sliding glass door, a split shower and toilet setup, and a big shower cubicle. The glasswork and craftsmanship are excellent - everything you come into contact with feels tactile and robust.

Crew Accommodation

Designed for four crew members, the crew space is accessed through a side door from the helm so they have easy movement between the decks, helm, and their living space. It's also where they cater to guests. The galley has a big hob, double-width oven, domestic-sized fridge/freezer, and overhead extraction.

Despite being a crew area, it doesn't feel like one, thanks to a high-quality finish and light from the hull windows, one of the benefits of the crew space being arranged at the forward end of the lower deck. There’s a mess where the crew can dine, watch TV, or catch up on work, complete with a washer and dryer, and a screen providing oversight of all the yacht’s systems. Identical sleeping cabins flank either side of the mess area with a pair of bunks.

Helm Station

This is the sole helm on the SP92 aside from the docking station on the sundeck. The yacht boasts a top speed of 38 knots, quite a feat for a vessel of this size, and when cruising at 35 knots, it delivers a remarkable range of 425nm.

To control the twin jet drives there are twin throttles for high-speed manoeuvres and a joystick for more precise slow-speed handling. The suite of cameras means you're well-equipped for tight spots, though the flybridge station is best for mooring as it offers an excellent all-round view of the yacht and makes it easy to communicate with the crew.

The Humphree interceptor system manages the trim automatically, adjusting to maintain optimal performance at any speed. Given how far forward the helm station is, it should be pretty quiet in here, even when the boat is charging along at 35 knots.

The helm is stylish yet functional

The upper helm is essentially a docking station, with a second joystick but no steering wheel or throttles. The helm is neat, though, it folds away at the touch of a button so when you're not using you'd never know it was there. If you want high performance that you can enjoy from a flybridge, you'd better look at the Pershing 9X.

On Deck

The SP92 has an enormous aft platform that's a significant part of its appeal. It's a lovely, wide, flat area, great for enjoying the elements with a section of the platform that drops down into the sea for swim access. Underneath this area is a tender garage spacious enough for a 4m (13ft) tender.

Sanlorenzo's flair for customisation is obvious in the cockpit. The boat we toured focused on sunbathing so there was a sunbathing pod with adjustable headrests that could be removed entirely. However, if you prefer dining space out here then a big table is an option too. The canopy overhead slots in neatly, providing shade as needed, and is easily removed when cruising.

On either side, there's the mooring gear and handy storage, with controls for the passerelle, which serves as a stairway into the sea and also as the gangway to the quayside when in port and moored stern to.

Side Decks & Foredeck

The yacht has symmetrical side decks, and while there are no traditional guard rails, those towering bulwarks give a good sense of security. The clever break in the bulwarks creates a lovely inside-out connection to the water from the saloon. The staircase leading to the sundeck is brilliantly subtle; it doesn't encroach on cockpit space, and you'd hardly know it's there such is the seamless integration into the boat's profile. Fender clips are conveniently positioned, allowing fenders to slot into the deck and be removed when not needed.

The foredeck itself is an impressive living space. A canopy shade mirrors the one aft and the seating arrangement underneath features a sofa beneath the windscreen, with adjustable tables that can be set at coffee table height. Forward, the bow offers a swathe of sheer sunbathing space.

Boat hooks, nestled neatly in their dedicated slots on both sides, prove invaluable when dealing with lazy lines in the Med. All the anchor mooring gear is hidden beneath a hatch, meaning the area keeps a sleek, flat surface. Access to the anchor and mooring gear is a breeze, just pop it up and you're sorted.

Sun Deck

As you'd expect from a sundeck, sunbathing space is everywhere - it's a deck that very much does what it says on the tin. If you fancy a table up, that’s doable, but the primary focus is sunbathing. As with the main deck, there is a canopy that can be erected here to protect this area in the heat of the day. This deck is almost invisible from the profile, though, which lends the SP92 such a sleek look.

Right at the front, you can see this is where the solar panels are installed. There’s also a big storage bin, capable of holding a great deal of kit. A fridge is conveniently positioned nearby, so you can keep refreshments at hand without needing to go too far for a cold drink.

Engine Room

The Sanlorenzo SP92’s engine room has two access points, one through a full-height door leading from the jolly cabin and the other one located in the cockpit via a hatch. Upon entering from the port side, the headroom feels adequate, but the space opens up quickly where the pair of MAN V12 2000s are installed. Finished in pristine white, in traditional Sanlorenzo fashion, the clean checker plate makes it very easy to spot any leakages.

The engine space is well-ventilated, with good levels of headroom, offering a fine place to work despite the tender garage's minor intrusion above. The Seakeeper 26 stabiliser, neatly positioned, works best when stationary at anchor, significantly reducing roll.

Our Verdict

The SP92 is a pretty novel addition to this sector; fast, powerful, stylish and customisable. Something to get you to where you want to go in style and at a serious pace. The scary truth is that this is probably going to be used as a (really) big day boat, so the relative lack of cabins compared to some rivals is unlikely to matter to a lot of owners. This is a true object of desire, a boat that looks like nothing else (apart from the SP110) and will age as gracefully as it carves through the water at 30 knots.

Rivals to Consider

The Extra X90 Fast may not be as quick as the Sanlorenzo with a top speed of "only" 30 knots, but it still gets a move on for something so large and luxurious. This is thanks to the triple Volvo Penta IPS1350 engines with 1,000hp each. The aft deck design is quite similar to the SP92's though the living space is all on the same level as opposed to the Sanlorenzo's mezzanine effect. The sun deck doesn't have a helm station but it's a great place to spread out and enjoy the sun and below deck, there are four ensuite cabins and space for four crew.

The award-winning Pershing 9X is quintessential Pershing. With looks to die for masses of power, you can't mistake it for anything else. It may not have the pebble-smooth lines of the SP92 but it demands attention, especially when you bury the throttles and spur its twin 2,600hp MTU engines into life. These mated to surface drives (hello rooster tail!), will push the 9X to a top speed of 42 knots and cruise at 38 knots for nearly 400nm. Bonkers numbers. The top deck is bigger and more useable than the SP92's and it has a proper helm, not just a docking station. It's not quite as flexible regarding the layout but on the lower deck you can have it with three or four cabins and there is the option to have a lower saloon.

The Riva 88 Folgare doesn't shout about its performance like the Pershing but with the largest engines, it will go some! The top speed with the twin 2,600hp MTUs is 39 knots with a cruising range of 340nm at a speed of 30 knots. It's a gorgeous-looking thing, dripping in style as one would expect with a Riva product. The sportsbridge is beautifully integrated into the overall profile of the boat but it's a top deck that features some sunbathing space and, crucially, a driving position so you can enjoy that performance from an elevated platform. Inside, it's a feast of varnished wood, stainless steel and cream leather with a bit of from trumping function here and there. Four ensuite cabins will cater for 8 guests in lavish comfort.
