Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 19m beam and a 4.85m draft. The yacht is built over 5 decks with an internal volume of 7,841 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.
Construction started in mid 2001 with the keel laid under the project name 'LE120'. Launched in March 2004 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in June 2004.
Exterior Design
Bannenburg revisited yacht designs from three decades earlier, notably used on the impressive Carinthia V and Carinthia VI yachts and incorporated the lean destroyer-style hull concept for Larry Ellison's Rising Sun. Utilizing sharp elongated lines, he experimented with extensive structural glass, resulting in a clean and stripped-down profile
The striking series of full-height curved windows span the length of the superstructure, ensuring the upper decks are bathed in natural light, providing unobstructed views of the ocean vista.
The exposed Z-frame structure, conceived in one of Bannenberg's initial sketches, serves to separate the tender launching areas. Despite its monumental scale, the structure is both sculptural and straightforward to fabricate.
The design prioritizes spacious guest cabins with direct access to exterior side decks, shielded from the elements by 45-degree indents in the superstructure. The yacht's extensive 8,000 square meters of living space includes amenities such as a wine cellar, cinema, and basketball court.
Rising Sun's length accommodates a variety of outdoor spaces, including an innovative rear cockpit deck that doubles as a basketball court. A catamaran tender capable of transporting the yacht's 4x4 vehicle ashore exemplifies Rising Sun's adventure-ready nature.
The yacht was extended a further 18 meters during its build, ensuring it surpassed Paul Allen's Microsoft yacht Octopus, which measured 126.2 meters.
Interior Design
Very few photographs are within the public domain, but from discreet views, it is known that the interior styling by San Francisco designer Laura Seccombe took a departure from Ellison's favorite color green. Instead, a neutral palette was chosen to create a calm and relaxing ambiance, with an incorporation of metal and stone to introduce texture and interest. Wood is extensively used, providing a contrasting element to the stronger metals.
Within the grand salon, wood-planked ceiling panels, textured walls, and square-cut cream sofas set the tone. Accents through soft furnishings feature deep brown, bronze, and silver, while occasional chairs introduce hints of green in a design with gold patterns.
Accommodation
Rising Sun offers accommodations for up to 18 guests across nine well-appointed cabins. These guest quarters are designed to provide a comfortable and private experience for all on board. The yacht is capable of carrying a crew of up to 46 to ensure the highest level of service and smooth operation during voyages.
The owner's suite, a prominent feature on the Rising Sun, is situated on a private deck, offering expansive panoramic views of the ocean. This suite includes a private saloon and a sizeable aft deck, creating an exclusive and personal space for the owner.
Each cabin on the Rising Sun is crafted to provide a serene environment for guests. The design leverages natural light, with the use of full-height curved windows that run the length of the superstructure, enhancing the sense of space and connection to the sea.

Powered by 4 x diesel MTU (20V 8000 M70) 20-cylinder 11,149hp engines running at 1150rpm, motor yacht Rising Sun is capable of reaching a top speed of 30 knots, and comfortably cruises at 26 knots.
