New look Amels superyacht ‘Here Comes the Sun’ unveiled after year long refit

The superyacht is now 6m (20ft) longer and sports a brand new color scheme amongst a number of modifications carried out as part of the refit.

The largest Amels superyacht delivered to date, ‘Here Comes the Sun’, has reemerged from the Amels and Damen Yachting shipyard even larger and with a brand new look.

The Tim Heywood-designed superyacht returned to Amels and Damen Yachting in 2020, under new ownership, for an extensive refit. The most noticeable changes following the rebuild are a 6m (20ft) extension to the Main Deck aft, which has seen her increase in size from 83m to 89m (272ft to 292ft), and a vibrant new color scheme following a full respray.

A significant number of design modifications have also taken place. The 6m (20ft) extension to the main deck provides for an enlarged beach club, spa facilities and a 7m (23ft) swimming pool. She also sports an extended sun deck aft now with a helicopter landing area, and two VIP suites with exterior balconies on the bridge deck aft.

A rebuild of this scale and complexity has required a very dynamic approach and good, open communication has been key.

Damen Yachting Project Manager Sander Peters, who worked closely with the Captain and Owner’s team during the refit, commented: “A rebuild of this scale and complexity has required a very dynamic approach and good, open communication has been key. The Captain and Owner’s team’s operational approach has been a big contributing factor to the progress of this time-critical project. Seeing her head back outside for the first time since all the works started is a wonderful moment, achieved by the teamwork of all those involved.”

This continues a trend YachtBuyer has noticed of larger yards carrying out refit work on their yachts, with the engineering and production teams’ knowledge of a yacht from the original build being key in a rebuild.  In April Amels and Damen Yachting welcomed back 52m (170.6ft) Amels 171 superyacht GRACE for a four-month refit, whilst in May Feadship completed a major refit on its 57m (187ft) superyacht AMARA. At the end of 2020, Lurssen redelivered its 110m (361ft) superyacht KAOS after an 18-month refit project.

Damen Yachting Sales Manager Michel Coens explains what this refit launch means to the shipyard: “Welcoming any of the fleet back to the yard is always done with pride but for ‘Here Comes the Sun’, it runs even deeper. She represents the first step back towards full custom and bigger projects. Many of the same craftsmen and women who were meticulously involved in the original build have been working on her during this refit, remoulding and reshaping her into the new masterpiece she is set to become. Her launch is a very proud moment.”

‘Here Comes the Sun’ will now undergo the final stages of her refit, ready to be delivered to her Owner later this summer.

Whilst ‘Here Comes the Sun’ is currently the largest Amels superyacht on the water, she will be usurped eventually by the 120m (394ft) ‘Project Signature’, an ecologically friendly superyacht announced by Amels and Imperial Yachts, in conjunction with Damen Yachting, last September. She is expected to be delivered in 2025 and will also take her place as the largest superyacht to be built in the Netherlands.
