The decision, taken by the Association’s General Council, marks a historic first, as Formenti becomes the inaugural representative from the small boating sector to lead the organisation.
His nomination will be formally ratified at the General Members’ Assembly on 16 May, held as part of the annual Spring SATEC Convention in Rapallo. The appointment follows a structured consultation process coordinated by the Association’s Appointment Commission, in alignment with its governing statutes and the wider framework of the Confederation of Industry. The process saw high levels of member engagement, with 79.04 percent participation and 94.64 percent of votes in favour.

My long-standing experience within the association has shaped in me a unified vision of Confindustria Nautica, and I intend to make that vision the cornerstone of my term, putting myself at the service of every part of the supply chain."
President
Italian Marine Industry Association
Formenti is the founder and long-time owner of Zar Formenti, a company he established in 1979 that has become known for its production of premium inflatable boats. He has been involved with the Italian Marine Industry Association since 2008, initially as a Director and later as Vice President from 2019. His work at a European level also includes serving as Vice-Chair of the European Boating Industry (EBI), after completing two terms as EBI President between 2015 and 2019.

Reflecting on his appointment, Formenti emphasised the importance of representing the entire supply chain and highlighted the role of smaller manufacturers in shaping the future of the industry. He cited priorities such as addressing environmental concerns, encouraging domestic market growth, simplifying regulation, and attracting younger generations to the sector - all within a challenging economic environment that places pressure on smaller players.
Formenti’s presidency signals a broader recognition of the contributions and capabilities of the small boatbuilding sector within Italy’s wider marine industry. His background and leadership experience at both national and European levels are expected to bring continuity and fresh insight to the Association’s future direction.
Key Members of the Italian Marine Industry Association
Formenti’s presidency also comes at a time when the Association continues to represent some of the most prominent names in Italian yacht building. Alongside the Azimut|Benetti Group, Confindustria Nautica counts among its key members the Ferretti Group, which includes CRN, Custom Line, and Riva, as well as Sanlorenzo S.p.A., known for its custom-built superyachts from 24 to 70 metres.

Other long-standing contributors to Italy’s shipbuilding reputation include Baglietto, with a heritage dating back to 1854 and a focus on high-performance aluminium and steel yachts, and Overmarine Group, the builder behind the Mangusta brand of high-speed luxury craft. Permare Group, through Amer Yachts, brings a strong emphasis on sustainability and custom design. These shipyards, along with many others within the Association, continue to uphold Italy’s position at the forefront of the global yachting industry.
With Piero Formenti taking the helm, the Italian Marine Industry Association enters a new chapter that recognises the growing influence of the small boating sector. Backed by a strong network of shipyards across the industry spectrum, the Association remains well-positioned to navigate the challenges ahead and support the continued strength of Italian yacht building on the global stage.
