The project is part of the 'Road to 2030' strategy by Sanlorenzo, focusing on innovation to reduce environmental impact and exceed regulatory standards, with the goal of delivering the first carbon-neutral yacht by 2030 through global partnerships.
The X-Space series integrates the spirit of an explorer with the comfort of a traditional cruiser. Sanlorenzo is currently reshaping the 50 X-Space yacht to fit this new setup, affecting tankage.
Onboard the new yacht for sale, two high-speed, four-stroke MAN diesel engines and two Nanni diesel gensets will run on a methanol-diesel mix. Green methanol, produced from renewable sources, powers 70% of the propulsion and hotel loads, reducing reliance on diesel.
The Role of Methanol in Eco-Friendly Yachting
Methanol, a promising alternative fuel, is biodegradable, safe to handle, and requires minimal infrastructure adaptation. Available at over 100 ports globally, it aligns with net-zero goals, especially when derived from renewable sources. Northern Europe leads the way with its Green Corridor, supporting carbon-neutral fuel options.
The use of alternative fuels, hybrid, and battery technologies is central to our green transformation... we’re thrilled to contribute further to reducing CO2 emissions in this project.

MAN Engines
Sanlorenzo and MAN expect the bi-fuel system to yield impressive results. Annual greenhouse gas emissions could decrease by 150 tons of CO2, fossil fuel consumption by 700 MWh, and air contaminants by 1,389 pounds (630 kilograms). These outcomes significantly surpass the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and European Union (EU) emissions reduction targets.
The LIFE MYSTIC project, launched in 2024 and co-financed by the EU, plays a crucial role in the bi-fuel initiative. Coordinated by Sanlorenzo, the €4.8 million project involves adapting the yacht's design to integrate methanol fuel storage and distribution systems. It highlights the shipyard’s commitment to exceeding the IMO’s 70% emissions reduction target by 2040 and the EU’s Fit for 55 goal of a 55% reduction by 2030.
The first Sanlorenzo 50 X-Space yacht will launch in 2027. Though this marks the shipyard's first dual-fuel project, it’s not their debut in alternative fuels. The Sanlorenzo 50 Steel, unveiled last year, uses a methanol fuel-cell system for hotel loads. Bluegame, a sister company, designed and built hydrogen-powered chase boats for America’s Cup teams, achieving speeds of 50 knots and a range of 180 miles.
No word yet if the new propulsion system will extend to the rest of the X-Space range. The range includes models like the Sanlorenzo 44 X-Space, to which motor yacht LA LA LAND belongs. Massimo Perotti, executive chairman and CEO of the Sanlorenzo Group, sees this as a substantial shift. He calls it “an ambitious project that will help revolutionize the entire yachting sector.”
