Lurssen’s first yacht in the 50m to 60m range since 1995 has hit the water as 55.5m (182ft) superyacht Moon Sand, formerly known as Project 13800, was launched.
Created in collaboration with Bannenberg & Rowell, who were responsible for her interior and exterior design, she is the smallest project undertaken by Lurssen since the launch of motor yacht ENVY (then known as XENIA) in 1995.
Whilst limited information is known about the motor yacht at present we believe her Gross Tonnage to be around the 800 mark, which compares favourably to similarly-sized new builds from the likes of Sanlorenzo and Benetti. We also know she features what has been called an ‘unusual interior arrangement’ and was inspired by the 1973 Lurssen yacht CARINTHIA VI, as Dickie Bannenberg of Bannenberg & Rowell confirmed at her launch:
”We are excited to see 13800 emerge from her shed” he said. “The initial concept was influenced by our studies based on the classic yacht CARINTHIA VI, designed by Bannenberg Snr, and built by Lürssen in 1973. Every centimetre of interior and exterior space usage has to be presented, discussed and agreed with the owners, and this has led to many inspiring discussions. We really look forward to seeing her completed over the coming months, including a spectacular interior.”
Initially announced in September 2018, the bespoke yacht has remained under wraps since April 2020 when she emerged from the building sheds for a series of tests. She is expected to be delivered to her Asian Owner in the summer.
With an average length of 95.7m (314ft) of the 50 plus yachts it has delivered since 2000, the building of Moon Sand is part of a conscious decision by Lurssen to re-establish itself as a serious proposition for yachts in the 55m (164ft) to 75m (246ft) bracket.
