Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 37'5" beam and a 11'10" draft. The yacht is built over 4 decks with an internal volume of 1,564 GT (Gross Tonnes).
The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. She was delivered to her owners in March 2004.
Exterior Design
During her construction, Utopia made history as the largest yacht ever launched from the De Vries yard, with dimensions that pushed the limits of the Rotterdam Canal. Featuring the longest bow overhang ever seen on a Feadship, the vessel's design incorporates a reversed transom and rounded stern quarters to soften her silhouette.
The forward section of the main deck spans the entire beam, offering expansive living space, while a walkaround deck on the level above facilitates easy movement around the yacht. To optimize height without compromising on weight, the main structure is crafted from aluminum, with composite materials used for the radar arch and mast.
A defining feature of the owner's deck level is the semi-circular arrangement of vertical windows, flooding the space with natural light and offering panoramic views. Despite the busy foredeck, adorned with mooring equipment and a crane, there are seating areas both at the bow and further back, integrated into the deck's curves. Ascending three steps from the tender stowage area reveals a sun pad and jacuzzi, perfect for relaxing in the sunshine.
As night falls, the foredeck transforms into a captivating scene with an illuminated circular 'palace' of the superstructure casting a gentle glow over the relaxation area, creating an enchanting ambiance.
On the upper deck aft, there's another jacuzzi tub, accompanied by comfortable seating. Descend the staircase to the expansive aft deck, where a relaxed steamer-style atmosphere awaits. Wooden chairs with sumptuous cream cushions offer comfort, while canopies provide shade. Stylish teak furniture and a highly polished dining table on steel supports form the alfresco dining area on the aft deck.
The yacht is notable for its expanse of vertical windows throughout, on a simple and sleek design.
Interior Design
The English design firm Redman Whiteley Dixon was tasked with creating a relaxed classical ambiance. They achieved this by paneling the walls with light, unstained oak accented with burl oak and a dark wenge outline. Carpets in pale shades of brown or golden beige, some textured, enhance the atmosphere. The lobby stands out with its giallo sienna marble floor bordered with diamonds of portoro. A classical staircase, featuring narrow brass handrails, connects all four decks.
Elegance without intimidation is the overarching theme of the main and upper deck salons. Simple shapes define the sofas and armchairs, complemented by natural colors. Occasionally, pieces of furniture boast exquisite marquetry details, adding a touch of refinement to the surroundings.
The design incorporates relatively simple shapes highlighted by intricate surface treatments, notably in the inset panels of burl olive within the doors, showcasing their striking grain patterns. Rare and vibrant marbles, including brecia benou and red damasco, play a significant role. These marbles hail from two villages in the Carrara region of Italy, where skilled artisans are dedicated to cutting and polishing stone for Feadship. While more exotic marbles are imported, only these seasoned Italian craftsmen possess the expertise to handle them. This is because the marbles with the most captivating patterns tend to be delicate and require careful precision to work with.
Accommodation
Utopia provides accommodation for up to 12 guests across six luxurious suites. The owner's suite occupies the entire upper deck, with a bedroom, a study, a family sitting room, and a private outdoor deck area with a spa pool and a circle of comfortable banquettes. The suite also features a private galley and an exercise room.
VIP staterooms are generously appointed and flooded with natural light streaming through expansive windows made of bulletproof glass. This design choice isn't due to an intention to venture into unsafe waters but rather to meet classification society standards, eliminating the need for storm covers and optimizing storage space onboard. One stateroom features an additional fold-down Pullman bed, planned for two children and a guest. Two further twin-bedded staterooms are situated on the lower deck with access via stairs from the main lobby.
There are 17 crew on board to ensure a full guest service.
