Explorer yacht refit delivers big size and range gains

Explorer yacht ‘Far Far Away’ has had 10m (32.8ft) added to her length and a huge increase in her range after an extensive refit.

Explorer yacht ‘Far Far Away’ has emerged from an ambitious 18 month refit with her autonomy doubled and 10m (32.8ft) added to her length.

The Inace built yacht entered the Italian yard Lusben in November 2019 for a series of structural changes, the most noticeable of which was an elongation of the hull from 36.7m (120.4ft) to 47m (154ft).

The complicated procedure saw an 8m (26ft) module inserted amidship, the stern platform lengthened by 1.5m (5ft) and the forward bulb extended by another 1.5m (5ft). Lusben’s team had to completely re-engineer the onboard systems for sanitary water, diesel lines and electrics, as well as install a new watertight door.

Fourteen months of work was done to increase the autonomy of the yacht. This included the addition of cold rooms of 9 square meters (96 sq. ft), a case of fresh water of 5,000 liters and two cases of diesel of 15,000 liters each. This was enough to increase the total diesel fuel capacity from 52,000 liters to 90,000 liters and increase the range of ‘Far Far Away’ to 8,000nm, leaving the superyacht able to cruise for at least three months without the need to stop in port.

The refit also saw the addition of a 9 square meter (96 sq. ft) laundry room, a new thermal imaging camera for night vision, two new 99Kw CAT generators, and the installation of a 60Kw stern thruster system. There was a total repainting of the hull and superstructure, refurbishment of four guests bathrooms and the original laundry room was transformed into a storage room.

As a result of all of these improvements, the yacht achieved double certification, for both private and commercial use.

The increase in size naturally has seen an increase in volume, and has led to an extra cabin being added. Far Far Away can now accommodate 12 guests across her six cabins under commercial certification and 15 guests in seven cabins under private certification.

The Captain of ‘Far Far Away’, Meo Palmieri, is pleased with the work, saying: “I believe that such a substantial and extensive hull lengthening work has never been carried out and the facility in Varazze proved to be the ideal location for these technically complex and sometimes delicate operations. This transformation also involved a series of changes to the initial work plan, and Lusben responded with promptness, competence and professionalism”.

Lusben was founded in 1956 and operates across three sites, the largest of which in Livorno can accommodate yachts of up to 120m (393.7ft) in length. It has carried out a number of notable refits already this year including the 48m (157ft) sailing yacht ‘Morning Glory’, famous for being formerly owned by Rupert Murdoch, and the Lurssen 60m (196ft) superyacht OASIS.
