Volvo Penta has beaten off competition from 53 products and 103 entrants to be announced as the overall winner of the DAME Awards at Metstrade 2021.
The Swedish-based supplier of engines and power systems took home the accolade for its assisted docking system as the 30th edition of the awards took place at RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre.
The assisted docking system gives a captain better control when docking a boat by automating his or her intentions and compensating for external elemental forces such as wind and current to make docking easier.
“For many years now we have seen Volvo Penta working on solutions that make close-quarters maneuvers easier and safer,” says renowned yacht designer, Andre Hoek on behalf of the DAME award jury. “The Assisted Docking solution really illustrates everything we are looking for in the DAME. It is the result of in-depth research, development, and extensive software and hardware design. The system is intuitive to use and even the hand controller feels nice to the touch. Great design has a critical role to play in bringing new people into boating. For us, this year, Volvo Penta’s Assisted Docking solution ticked all the DAME Awards’ many boxes.”
An expert jury shortlisted the 53 products and 103 entries to enter the final round of judging and then selected a number of category winners and an overall winner. The jury based its decision on a number of factors including product design, ease of use, functionality, innovation and its expected impact on the marine industry.
The DAME Design Awards were launched in 1991 to promote design in all disciplines and to recognize the best-designed products at the Metstrade show, a show dedicated to the marine industry.
